If the Cayman had 400HP, would you still get a 911?
Ya,I understand what you mean.
But I believe the 911's suspension and chassis much better than cayman.lap time won't pass 911 if just =same power.
In a car, HP not every thing. Why mustang Shelby won't faster than lower HP vette on track? I know it lighter but that monster got huge hp numbers. That's the answer.
If you say new cayman s faster than 997's 911 then I will believe it.But on 991 it won't happen.just because it is 991 new gen 911.
Maybe I said maybe cayman s will be same as 991 c2s when it got 400 for 0-100. My old 2012 c2s 991 did 0-62 in 4.2X sec I using techPro to tested with sport plus on.
But dude the HP not everything.
Doesn't mean an A car tuning to 500 hp will be same faster as B car with stock 500 hp.
The factory tune is very hight tech thing, they will balance every thing every rpm power to the car to make sure the all power put on ground and good grip.
That's my point.
I like cayman also just like I love porsche.
Doesn't mean cayman stupid to have 400hp as this point.
But cayman if got very a lot option, then spend money to go 400hp.why don't buy a stock 400hp c2s?
Like if some one don't have 911 yet.and plan to buy a c2s or 4s whatever then mod to 460-470 or 500 hp same thing like that. You think that 911 after tuning will be faster than GT3 on 0-100 or 60 time? Or lap time ?
That's what I'm thinking.
If some one had a cayman s or no s already then wanna mod the car to 400,that's ok not bad.but kind a little bit hard to over c2s performance at all.
2nd, If plan to buy one then mod to 400hp.just please don't do that it's not worth that much money to tuning and not that easy to get that almost 75HP to upgrade after very balanced tune.i know ecu+exhaust+intake+etc could be close to 75hp.
But NA engine not grow up that much power like turbo cars after ECU got 30-60 HP numbers.
Cayman s is only lighter around 100kg than 991.i didn't see that much advantage by weight.
One more thing,Why people love porsche so much it's just because every porsche's sport car are so balanced !
Why I like Cayman is because it just right there. When driven a cayman, she's power won't feel less and won't be too much.Very easy to handle and so much fun. This is the different between 911 and cayman or boxter.
Driven cayman you can turn off everything to be a pure driver. This can't be happen at 991.except you are very high skill or rider.
If be came a big hp number's cayman,I think it lose some important thing for a cayman.
Hope you understand

Interesting thread. I have had 2 Cayman S's, and 06 and recently a 14S, substantially modded, that I just traded in for a 991S. The Cayman is an awesome car, however the 991 just feels more substantial, and more upscale. Drive them back to back and you'll see/feel the difference. That said I love the Cayman platform, more power would be great, but I'm still a sucker for that iconic 911 shape, and the fact that the 911 is still able to compete nose to nose and win against the best that the Ferraris, Vettes and Vipers in international competition speaks volumes. It still works.
My 991S (SPASM and PDCC, but also my first one that only had the standard suspension) has definitely a better suspension than my Cayman R, whether it is for the road or the track. But it is not apples to apples.
Here is a spin on the question. If the 911 was 60k would you get it instead of the Cayman. The answer is no. The Cayman will never get the same treatment as its money maker from Porsche.
Problem solved:
If those who enjoy the Cayman and Boxster over the 911 and say money is not the issue here is the car for you. The Ruf 3800. Conversation over. It has the 911 S motor and pushes 420 horse power. They are happy to build the Cayman for an additional 6800. Enjoy.

Some good points made here but something important that hasn't been focused on is - perhaps Porsche doesn't want you to have to decide. With the introduction of the 991 and the price increase (in constant dollars) that came with it, Porsche has further emphasized one of two significant differentiation points between the Cayman and the 911 (price and performance), creating a situation where Cayman customers and 911 customers will most likely remain so with very little crossover. If you think about the purchase considerations involved - Cayman owners have the better of it. For a fraction of the 911 price, they can possess a car that many believe has the potential to be Porsche's finest. With this information, they can continue to buy/lease Caymans with impunity and enjoy a terrific driving experience with little or no financial remorse. The 911 customers, however, have been done a disservice. Very few if any seem interested in "downgrading" to a Cayman and for the commitment they have shown to Porsche buying a 911, they now have to pay a higher price just to maintain status quo.
In part for these reasons, if I had to bet - I think Porsche will further segment it's model lineup into two groups. Its highest performance cars including the GTs and 911, then everything else including Cayman, Boxter, Panamera, Cayenne (and anything else they may introduce). This later group is more easily sold being more price accessible and holding general appeal to a much larger customer base. Porsche will never get rid of the 911 - it's their icon, but they can make it more exclusive (and expensive). The real test will be to see how Porsche responds to competitive threats (present and planned) posed to the 911 by Maserati, Mercedes, Aston Martin, Jaguar, Nissan and Lexus. Porsche will have to stay on its toes and be much quicker to update the 911s than in years past. They will also have the further disadvantage of not being able to increase price as much for the next go around (since they have so much already with the 991) without alienating some of their customer base.
Having expressed these opinions, let me get back to the original question. The Cayman is a terrific car but Porsche will never do anything with it to invite closer comparison with the 911. From a financial standpoint, Cayman owners can take satisfaction in knowing that their car is a great buy and a pleasure to drive. 911 owners don't have it so easy, however, having a 991 4S myself, I can honestly say that the car is sublime and the thrill and satisfaction of my time behind the wheel obscures any good judgement and financial prudence that I might otherwise exercise.

Interesting question. Does Porsche put more development time in the suspension and chassis of the 911? My 991S (SPASM and PDCC, but also my first one that only had the standard suspension) has definitely a better suspension than my Cayman R, whether it is for the road or the track. But it is not apples to apples.

Even lowly Car and Driver says the GT3 handles better than the Cayman R.
