The symposer just pipes a dull low -pitched diaphragm -created honking/booming sound into the cabin- it is not creating raspy ,thrilling sounds.

As posted above, it actually masks the ability to hear the actual motor /exhaust from
" way out back "

I felt the same way at first, but you get used to having a quiet cabin, especially if you're constantly rolling with someone else in the car.

 

Just had a chance to do the mod. Wow, it's quieter. That was an annoying drone

 

I have a Turbo S with an exhaust, and as much as I love the exhaust sound and performance, interior drone at idle and cruising along is a bit much. So I followed this great DIY, and also then added a bit more insulation since i had the rear cover off. After stuffing the tube with sound deadening material, I bought a roll of 1.25 inch wide, tape back insulating foam. I lined the entire rear of the area with the foam tape, and then re-installed the cover. Soooo much better now! Can hear the radio when cruising, etc. Plus, still sounds like a beast under WOT with the exhaust.

 

Has anyone disconnected the sound symposia on a 2017 model (991.2)?

 

Not me. Would be too quiet. Love the sound.

For those interested;

I had my car at the dealership this morning to plug the sound symposer system. The 991.2 has two symposer tubes. The dealer plugged them by removing the rear deck trim and also removed the bumper and plugged them from the engine side and then duct taped the ends.

After a test drive, I don't think the drone at 2,200 RPM is much different. Under acceleration, there is a slight reduction in sound and I believe it allows the turbo whistle to be heard more, but I'm not sure about that.

So there you have it, if you have a 991.2 with PSE and you are hearing a constant drone at 2200 - 2300 RPM, the fix isn't with the symposer tubes, but rather to force the engine out of that RPM range by selecting a different gear.

 

I guess I am in the minority, but I love the sound symposer.

In fact, when one of my change over valves failed, it was the one for the sound symposer and I could immediately tell the difference in cabin sound.

When the noise is too much of a drone for me, I simply shut off PSE and I'm happy with the quiet.

If you modders sell your cars, it would be good karma to reverse your mod or at least document it somewhere for the next owner. The symposer is a feature, after all.

 

I find tire noise the only culprit in my 991.2S.

991.1 S with stock exhaust.
plugged the symposer outlet hole that is inside the cabin
removed the symposer hose in the engine compartment from the symposer hole that I just plugged
stuffed the exposed. hose with material and moved it out of the way of any rotating component.
Enjoying the mod…quieter cabin and only hearing true sounds of the engine and exhaust
