7MT Launch 991S

So the PDK is fantastic for launching the car with the launch control option. But for us MT drivers, what's the best way to get the fastest launch. How high do you rev and drop the clutch? Do you redline before changing or is there an optimal shift point? Waiting to break in the engine a bit more, but when I do....

PS
Road and Track just did 61 consecutive launches with the 991 TTS without a glitch. Pretty amazing.

I definitely would not want to be the lucky purchaser of that demo car.

There is definitely an art to getting the maximum performance out of a manual, which can prove quite rewarding.

You're not getting the maximum potential from your car if you're shifting at red-line. Check out a few dyno-graphs and you will see where the peak power really is.

I'm posting a link that will provide some wonderful advice for you. I used Ranger's techniques when I had my ZO6 and they do work. I'm using the same methods for the 991S and they are working just as well.

Whether you're trying to lower your sixty-foot times or simply looking to ruin some bully's day at a red light, check out rangers pointers on launching and shifting techniques.

Enjoy your car and be careful.

This question again...

Its going to take practice and lots of it to learn how to launch your car and you are going to have to learn how to watch the tachometer.

You do not shift at red line because you will not complete the shift before the engine speed passes the red line....ideally (and after you have learned how to shift your car otherwise give yourself a 1000 rpm range) you want to shift around 500 RPMs before red line. That way you will complete your shift at red line.

Launching your car is an art unto itself. Some people use a toe-heel method to keep the brakes engaged while they bring the RPMs up. Others will spend some money on a little item called a line lock. What is a line lock you say? A line lock is a device that is integrated into your brake system that when activated will keep your front brakes engaged until you release them. Drag racers use these.

What RPM do you rev the engine too? Good question because it varies by car BUT for the 911 a good starting point would 6600 which is the same RPMs that the PDK equipped cars use...you may find over time that a different RPM suits your style better. Some guys have told me a manual 911 launches better at a lower RPM than the PDK so feel free to try that as well.

Good luck with this and when you have a few moments be sure to send us the VIN of your car so we can avoid buying it when you end up selling it.

OK, so from last night's drive.

I prefer not to chew up my snow tires on a launch

this is just a fun entrance with a little overpass after the onramp near home

I just rev the car up to about 4-4.5k RPM's and then drop the clutch. Not completely 'dumped', but kind of gently and the car responds very well.

Thanks HH - yeah, she's fine. What a gal. Back to regular PSE and OEM tips, and I'll probably just keep her that way, it's great just the way it is. Looking forward to making some of the car meets down there this spring. Sorry I missed everything last year. Hope all is well. -Chris

Thanks. Don't worry I won't be doing 0-60 at every red light. But what good is a Porsche if you don't push it
