2015 Targa: First Drive
Should have made them T-tops like the old Vettes had. Less weight, and I see no issue in stopping and removing the tops, I guess unless you are stuck in traffic and it starts to rain. The newer Vettes with the one piece design is not great IMHO.
No offense intended but am I the only one that thinks the Targa is not a good looking variant of the 991?
The lines combined with the silver targa bar just don't work. At least to my eyes.

This an easy fix and probably cheaper than a factory option.
i think your thinking of a t-top
Porsche being Porsche, they know that most modern leaning buyers would rather have a darkened Targa hoop , since the aluminum colored one will not look good with lighter body colors or dark wheels that are popular today ....hence, the darker hoop will become an option in the near future ....for $4000
cheaper to just have someone wrap it, IMO, which can be returned to OEM easily at trade in

Maybe some of you knew this already, or maybe not, but I heard today from my dealer why the roof can't be operated while driving...
The problem is that the rear deck+window cover the tail lights while operating the roof, which is not allowed. So the problem is a regulation issue, not a technical issue.
They could have made it in a way that the roof didn't cover the taillights, but it meant they had to counter-balance it and add extra arms. That would have added even more weight and Porsche engineers obviously didn't want that.
I still think that the solution used in the 918 would've been much better...

Fail? Yes, the 993, 996 and 997 variants were a BIG fail indeed. They were just a 911 with a glass house.... This one looks absolutely beautiful. Much, much better than the rather ugly cab as well.
I agree with some that Porsche needs to offer the option, to get the Targa bar in matte black or platinum. I also would have prefered that the Targa roof was manually operated. That way they could have made the roof from 2 separate carbon fiber panels like on the 918. They could be offered in a cloth covered version and a painted version.
There's no need for an electrically operated roof. It only adds weight and the possibillity of Porsche's common rattles and failures and since it can't be operated while driving anyway, I don't see any benefits of that roof at all...
I like the looks of the Targa very much.... Curious to drive the car, although I will probably never buy one.

Question for you dear. Have you owned a 993, 996 or 997 Targa? I have and loved it. Rattles are none existent unless well below freezing and I never experienced a failure. To experience the benefits of the previous Targa model, you should get one. You'll likely be surprised.
SUZY,

The new 991 Targa looks fabulous and is IMHO one of the best looking 911s ever (very close behind the 991 C4S). There are actually only two Targas that I like... the original with the aluminium bar and the 991 Targa.
The 993, 996 and 997 Targa variants are not real Targas. They are just coupes with a very large sunroof. Never liked them...never will like them. (matter of personal taste I guess).
I attended the launch on the Targa here in Cape Town.
I agree with what you say. Lines hurt my eyes.
Apart from that I have to fail the roof instantly. A soft top ?
You know what that means. You have a seagull flying overhead at say 10.000 feet. What do you think is going to happen ? Yes, you have that one nailed: Target practise. No self respecting seagull is going to miss this lovely opportunety. Guess who has to clean that mess. Ever tried that on a soft top ?
They have a soft top. It's called a cabriolet. Works better, prettier (apart from the seagull issue). Why another one ? If that would have been a removable/foldable/whatever hardtop I would understand. But now I don't.
Also, rather cramped rear now. OK, the two rear seats aren't exactly big in the Coupe to start with - but they are usable and they get used fairly frequently in mine. All but impossible in the new Targa. They could have just done a nice parcel shelf. Would have been more user friendly.
OK, that's it. Don't get me started on the new Macan...

Personally, I have never liked the look of the Targa. Since everything now has to be motorized, you have to have a complex mechanism to retract and hide the top where in the beginning you just removed the 10lb top and stowed it yourself (saving weight and about $4K).
