Crazy idea??
I don't understand why anyone would buy one of these. Why wouldn't you just get a sedan? M3, M5, S4, S6, S7, S8, C63, E63, Panamera...shall I keep going? The Macan is a heavier sedan on stilts built for grandpas that can get down low enough to get in a real car. Sorry...
Perhaps you would understand if you lived in the Northeast and had to routinely deal with wintry road conditions. No, I won't be substituting a Macan for my 991 or P4S; but the Macan would be on my short-list if I was in the market for a small SUV...and, yes, I'm a grandfather!
The only reasons I could surmise would be easier access in and out of the cabin for a person with a baby that has back problems or an elderly person with trouble getting in and out of a vehicle.
Maybe I don't understand the need for convenience. For example, I watch people fight and wait for a parking space up front when there are dozens of spots a couple of hundred feet away from the entrance to the store.
As a replacement no, but as an CUV, yes. My wife who drives a Infiniti G37x, which I love, does not like the entry exit. The Macan and Q5 which she likes are easier to get in and out of, also they have they riding high feeling. We are waiting for the diesel version or maybe the Q5. We're going to a launch party for the Macan in a few weeks at the local dealership.
I'm from the Poconos in NE PA. I understand the need to get around in not so nice weather conditions. I'm less understanding of why one would want a vehicle that is heavier, more likely to roll in an accident, offers little to no cargo advantage, doesn't offer much clearance or any traction advantage, and holds the same amount of passangers as all-wheel drive sedan. At lease a station wagon offers more cargo space.

Maybe I'm missing something about the Macan, but I tend to see it along the same lines as Lexus' RX vehicles which was/is a game-changer for people who wanted more than a station wagon but not as much as an SUV. I haven't seen or read where the Macan would be more or less subject to roll over in an accident. I know that I rode as a passenger in a Cayenne with a professional driver on a track and he made that vehicle do things that I thought were impossible for an SUV. I seem to recall learning the the Macan has a lower center of gravity and that should make it less prone to roll-over. ??? Anyway, I'm looking forward to learning more about the Macan as opposed to writing it off. By the way, to your other point, as I am sure you are aware, mobility impairment is not just limited to persons who are "elderly".
If I want utility, I go and buy a SUV, probably a Toyota Forerunner or maybe the Lexus, although to me Lexus as a brand has taken a dive from the early 90's when it was a hot brand so I'd just assume buy a luxury Toyota as opposed to Lexus.
If I want a car to drive to work, take customers out and be middle of the road acceptable to all involved. I buy an Audi A6 or maybe one of the many Mercedes sedans that are ok but don't really excite me much.
If I want a sports car I get a Porsche..
All purchased for different reasons, but comparing cars bought for different reasons is pointless and impossible.
