Thumbs down Slow 991 Loaner

https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...300-miles.html

Sad News @ 300 miles Got an error light for rear steering not operating properly...car is back at the dealer after a scant 10 days in my possession. I almost cried.

The dealer gave me a 2014 911 S with 54 miles as a loaner...crazy thing is that when I drove off I asked myself "Why is this car so slow?"...oh how quickly the bar gets set by the Turbo S.

I'll keep you posted on what the diagnosis is...I think I read a few months back about someone else having a similar problem.

Wow, rubbing it in for all the low life, cheap people who cant afford a turbo...

But seriously, why would you post this here? You have a turbo, post it there. We don't come to your sub forum and talk about how often your turbo is in the shop...

Best of luck with your first year production model.

The Turbo S is faster then a base S. Who knew? Please don't tell me the base turbo is faster also.

I soooo apologize to you!!! Boy, did I misread that!

And yes, a 991 S is terribly slow... I'd hate to have to stoop that low, wouldn't you???

I wouldn't say that the 991 S is slow. And I also wouldn't say that it's fast...

It's all relative.

Lol nice. I think the 991 S is plenty fast enough. It's not all about speed as we know but the 991 mixes everything in oh sowell.

Yeah, but you'll never get some people to acknowledge that.. and it depends on what you compare it to so it is always relative. Yep an F18 is faster than a 991S

Honestly the 991S is plenty fast.. I listen to the nonsense about how there isn't as much torque.. as compared to a V8 muscle car (I'll use the Vette as an example but it isn't about Vettes vs 911). But somehow usually when I watch a drag race between the two I always see the 911 out accelerate the V8 from the start.. So based on my physics, there had to be more torque for that to happen since acceleration is based on the torque (yes mass is involved too).

And couple that with the overall drive train gear ratios that allow the 911 to hit 190 MPh, I'm surprised that the 911 has the acceleration that it does. My 69 350 Camero that felt like it had so much torque, with it's overall drive ratio, I don't think I could ever even get it to 120mph it was geared so low.

What I would have expected if there was less torque, was for the 911 to trail and maybe go ahead toward the end of the run..

I just don't think most people have a clue as to how to drive a 6 cyl lower displacement high rev engine.. where physics dictates where both torque and HP are developed at higher RPM... than a comparable higher displacement low revving 8 cyl engine.

The torque is there, you just need to open the throttle and get to 4K and then it kicks you in the ***.. But if you never get above 4K, you might think that. This perception is even a reason why Porsche remaps the throttle curve with Sport and Sport+ since folks are reluctant to push on the long peddle on the right..

Well there's not many production cars this side of a Veyron that can out accelerate a Turbo S. It's an absolute beast but you can only enjoy it 2.8 seconds at a time legally

You have to have a whole lot of restraint if you value you're license!

My 991 C4 returns the favor every time I turn it on and that does it for me.

That sums it up nicely scatkins. I think people are afraid to drive cars at higher rpms for fear of hurting the car. This car needs to be revved and it's built for it. Drive it

The other thing is that even when my C2 is WOT, it is really smooth.. and not nearly as violent as any other high performance car I've driven. So there is a sense that the torque isn't there.. But then I look down and I'm at 100 already.. So I think there is also perception...

I'm glad you made that point because the thought occurred to me the first time I read this thread that the 991 can pull like a freight train...the power is right there when needed. I used to drive an M6 and, in my opinion, my 991 C4 pulls just as hard at speed if not more so. I won't admit to this anywhere else but, recently, my wife and I were returning from a nice day-trip in Annapolis on a stretch of highway that was 2-lanes. I was kind of sandwiched between a car immediately in front and another on my left side...the vehilce on the left would neither speed up or slow down to allow me access to the left lane. As was the case with my 981 Boxster S, I believed that, rather than a car-length, all I needed for the 991 was an angle and, when the vehicle on the left gave me enough, I took it and was away like I wasn't there. I know that there are many other really fine cars out there, but I've not yet experienced anything that drives as well as the 991.

Yep, it does.. it really is a barbarian beast disguised in an Armani suit. ..

If you drive it gingerly, it behaves prim and proper..

But if you ask it to do something, you aren't told no..
