DIY Steering Wheel Removal 991

Searched for awhile and only found instructions for older models. Found out it's almost the same procedure for a 2012 991.

First off, it took me 20 minutes to swap out a standard steering wheel for a Sport Design steering wheel. My porsche guy wanted $300 for the swap. He told me it would take him 3 hours to do it. What a rip off.

Here you go:

Tools:

T55 torx bit
wrench
small flat head or anything close to it
permanent marker

Instructions:

1. Disconnect battery (negative terminal)
2. straighten out wheels and steering wheel
3. using a small flat head (or something of the same size) and insert it up through the tiny hole below the steering wheel. What you're trying to do is to push "UP" on a spring. The airbag will release when you push up on the spring.
4. take out the airbag and unclip all the connections from the airbag and the one connection at the back of the steering wheel .
5. using a t55 torx bit and wrench, unscrew the screw in the middle of the steering wheel. DO NOT TAKE THE STEERING WHEEL OFF!!!!
6. Before taking the steering wheel off, use a marker and make a mark as shown in the picture. So that when putting the steering back, it in the right position.
7. Now, take the steering wheel off. Put the new wheel back on, make sure to align the small notch(cut) on the ring of the steering wheel with the mark that you made earlier. Connect the airbag and all the connections. Push the airbag back and it's done.

If anything is confusing, let me know.

This is great! My SD steering is on its way home, no need to rush to the stealership this time.
Thanks!

Excellent how to! Thanks for posting. Also love how the black wheel and mats breaks up all the luxor beige. Very nice.

Thanks sizzle chest. Exactly, there was too much luxor beige. Bringing in the black mats and steering wheel mellow out the beige. The black steering wheel and mats play well with the black center console and the dash.

http://www.macarbon.com/install_guid...stallation.pdf

It is a good idea to push the **** down as you twist the unlock ring on the bottom - makes it a little easier to unlock. Also, for the new ****, pushing the **** down makes it easier to lock the bottom ring. Hope this helps.

Please note that this is a plug and play install only for the manual 991.
With PDK, even if you have the standard non-multifunction steering wheel it needs to be reprogrammed via PWIS.
I did the swap by myself and the PDK went crazy, now it doesnt downshift or upshift, only through the paddles with two+ seconds delay.
Car is on the dealer, I hope I didnt damage any electronic components
