SF Bay Area oil change prices

Since I have about 5k and 11months on my 991 I'm getting the change oil message. Today I set about calling the various Bay Area dealers to get their quote for the service. I found that the dealers prices varied wildly for the same service. Some won't do just an oil service with the reset.

I've listed the results below. If you have a recommendation or other consideration I'd love to hear from you.

Stead/walnut creek. $350.00 w/inspection $250.00 oil only

Livermore oil only $299.00

Sonnen oil only $299.00

Carlson oil only $199.00 / $379 oil + inspection

Rector $295.00 oil

Niello $295.00 oil

Personally I'd prefer an oil only service. The advisors say porsche "recommend" that you change oil annually but they don't offer a coherent reason why. A lot of well there's wear and "stuff" and someone claimed that the synthetic oil degrades quickly? I thought the whole premise of synthetic was that it had far superior longevity.

Lastly one dealer stated that independent shops can't reset the warning and advised me to avoid independents if I valued my vehicle. Biased maybe?

In any case I'll get it done but I'm not looking to pay for additional services that aren't due.

I hope this info is helpful.

Update: Fremont called back, spoke with Scott. He looked up my car since I purchased it there and then he reminded me that I have a "card" for a $120.00 oil service. Wow! He didn't need to do that. I've always been. Impressed with fletcher jones Porsche so I'm going back to them even though it's a further drive.

Aranthir,
Independent shops can certainly reset the indicator. I respect independents more than dealers myself.

If you are in the South Bay, try Don Wise in Campbell on Dell Ave. Very respectable. Used to work up the peninsula at a dealer years ago as service manager if memory serves me.

I am thinking $200 for minor service (oil and filter change) including inspection.

I'm struggling with this. I've got an oil change coming up in the summer. I trust Marvin at RennShop over anyone else, but keeping a history or relationship with the dealer can come in handy at times.

Two questions:

Isn't the first service at Fremont free?

What is this card? Is it the $1000 20% card that Fremont sent around last year?

To me peace of mind is more important than saving few nickels and going to independent shops - after all it's only after few months unless you drive hundreds of miles every day.

Correct - it is free unless you decide to get it done prior to 1 year or 10K mark (whichever comes first).

I did mine after 3K (paid Porsche of Fremont) and then around 6K (1 yr period) they did it FOC.

Eh.. not sure I have any worry in the least with a good independent. Especially on an oil change. I'm a little more concerned when it comes to removing bumper panels to get at the filters. But for an oil only change It's remove the plug.. drain, insert plug and fill. It isn't like I'd give the retards at jiffy lube a shot, but in general a good independent is just fine for routine maintenance.

But hey if paying more money makes people feel better. Go for it so you can support new carpet in the dealer show room..

For "new" cars the first service is free.

The card is part of the Preferred owners program which applies to both new and pre owned cars.
