Porsches are a bit of a rip-off
Agree 911 is definitely mass produced... However it is the scale of that mass production. If you are producing 2 million of something vs 100,000... streamlining the production process is much more important.. With a lower production product you have the ability to provide more flexibility with options. But as production volume goes up, there is a strong benefit in limiting options which is the real reason that the high volume Toyotas and Hondas have very few options within an individual version (i.e the LE, SE's etc). I actually disagree with the argument about all of the options being a negative thing.. I really like having a lower base and then adding a wide variety of options on a 911.. It is one of the reasons that ordering one is so popular. Ever try to order a Toyota Camry or even a Lexus? No one does. I think it is really a benefit the way Porsche does it.. Some people want a racing version and don't care about creature comforts and others don't care about racing.. and just want creature comforts.. Some want both. I've rarely seen two people on this forum that agree as to what is an ideal configuration. And we enjoy all the variation that is possible. The problem is I think people just psychologically can't accept the incremental prices and think in their head that the base MSRP is really the cost when comparing since that is how the high volume Japanese and Korean boxes do it.. If everyone would just accept that a C2S (just for example) really costs about $125 to $130K for a nice configuration and not the 98K base fantasy they wouldn't get so wigged out about it and feeling that they are "ripped off". It's a perception problem about the cost of the car.. and not understanding the true price category..
This thread is great but let's look at this another way. Earlier it was said that a C2S is really $130k. If you had that amount as the budget for your P-car then you have to find a car that fits your needs. You can build it and pay through the nose. Or you can source a decent used one and maybe save some of your money. Ultimately, you are going to purchase the car that best fits your needs. Getting screwed on pricing is a given so finding the best car with the best goodies THAT YOU VALUE THE MOST is the name of the game. Source the car with the options you want or build one and take the hit. What else can we do?
but you forgot recurring themes like "manual vs PDK...", "911 cs C7", etc. and yet, I always end up posting too!
With "nothing special" I meant that it is not a rare car. Something you don't see every day.
That is also why I like the 911 or for that matter also the 981. It's not a car that say "look at me!". It's understated, below the radar, but still able to give the driver a "special" feeling. That's what a sportscar is about.
There are many great sportscars out there, but the 911 is in a class of its own when it comes to a daily driveable sportscar. A big part of that, is that it isn't a rare or "special" car...

Once again I find myself in agreement with the petrol head. In the end I believe "special" relates to how the car makes you feel and not someone else's perception. And Suzy, the part about being understated is a big thing in my book. Pull up in a F 458 or Lambo and literally everyone stops and gawks. Pull up in a 911 and people walk right by and think...nice car. That's a huge plus to me
I like Suzy's term... Special... Exotic always seems like something odd and you would never dd... Ie most of the things in jay Leno's garage... I'm not sure most people would really want an exotic.. It just sounds touchy and difficult.. Not necessarily refined and perfected..
I like the idea of seeing my porsche in parking lot at the supermarket.. (Far corner away from everyone lol).. When you see one there you tend to say to your self... Oh a porsche.. That tends to imply special...
Agreed and I would stop as well. haha. But...I still stand on what I wrote.
Gotta agree, I think at this price at least a minimum of leather should be standard, not a $4k option. Or maybe Porsche should start packaging options together to kind of ease the pain and lower the price.
I must say I do feel "special" driving one. Here in Mass there's not a lot of Porsches around on a daily basis, even though my car is not my DD.

IMO value, or lack thereof, is up to the person writing the check. apparently enough people see value in P cars and buy them. Else they would be out of business.
its really that simple IMO. i'm not arguing that you don't see the value in it, just suggesting If you think its not a good value, buy something else. otherwise you will likely have buyers remorse

It is the same way with new mandated safety oriented equipment. It just jacks up the base price it isn't like the OEM eats the added cost.
