PlastiDip Experiments - Stock Side Mirrors
Thanks! Always going for something a bit different. I am always restless, experimenting with different looks, some good, some bad.
Thanks Sizzle! You have any pics of your dip'd wheels? I am considering doing the wheels as well.
Hmmm. Hadn't thought about that. Honestly never think about them since I don't think I have or ever will use them -- wish there was a delete option! But, you've got me thinking about it. So maybe I'll give it a go. I do like it when others have them painted body color to match, the black "dots" might look like something stuck on the front....
Don't disagree with you that the side skirt 'extensions' on the 4 and TT model bodies take a beating... but interestingly the plastidip is a pretty-good protection layer. Applied thick enough, it may be as good as film like Xpel. Some members of R-list board use plastidip on the front end of their track cars to protect from various types of damage. So, dip'ing the side skirts may make sense. Since mine are already black, wouldn't make any significant visual difference tho. If they were painted GT Silver body color, I would def have them covered -- I see lots of tiny little nicks and whatnot on the surface from road grit and stones....
I do prefer the SD mirrors in body color (GT Silver in our case!), but didn't have that option for my C4S. I definitely am considering updating to the SD mirrors from stock in the near future, as I like the shape much more -- but before I do I wanted to experiment a bit. Since there are other black bits around the car, I find that adding some additional matte black to the overall GT Silver car adds unique look that is distinctively "mine."
I don't see this as much different than guys that pick deviated stitching, colored seat belts, diff color wheels, and so on....

But totally understand to each his own. I would love to have a TTS in my garage to mess with!
Nice Job Jawells... Like the mirros. . Not really so sure on the roof but of course as long as you like it that is all that really matters.
But you have a lot more guts than I have, to experiment on a 991.
I'm not all that familar with Plastidip but I'm assuming it doesn't come off easily?

^^^^scatkins. It comes of pretty easily. Find an edge and just pull. Should come off in one big piece or a few big ones. It is pretty durable though. Had mine on my wheels and emblems for some time. It's tough stuff! Easy to use, inexpensive and easy to change out the look if you want.
Questions for you -- 1. Do you still have the dip on your wheels? 2. How did it hold-up over time? and 3. When you applied, did you dip the barrel of the wheel at the same time? I am about to do this, but with matte black dip, and will be taking each wheel off and applying to both sides. I am guessing that I'll need a couple of cans of dip for each wheel if I apply 4 coats.
thanks again!
Sizzle- that looked great! Thanks, and not sure how I missed your previous post. Very nice.

jawells1: Yes. Wheels are still dipped and holding up fine to everything. Washing/cleaning them takes a little bit more of a 'light' approach. You can still hit them with wheel cleaner/soap/etc, but I am very gentle with the wash mish/brushes. Also when drying them I am careful as I don't want to 'peel' a spot or anything. I usually master blast them off but I blew some off of a center cap and had to redo it! Lesson learned.
Yes, I did the barrels first so I wouldn't have any dip overspray on the face of the wheels which could give me some high spots. I then did the faces.
I took the wheels off to do them. I bought 4 cans of color and 2 cans of clear/glossifier. I used all 4 cans of color and almost both cans of gloss. (remember, I also did my emblems, they didn't take much, but I used almost the rest up on them)
I did 4-5 coats on each face and maybe 3 or so on the barrels.
Hope this helps and happy dipping! (I'll see if I have any other pics)
Thanks, Sizzle! Exactly what I was looking-for. PM sent....
