I could use more power!
I could use more power!
Hi everyone.
Do you ever think you could use more power on public roads and highways (with speed limits) when driving yours 991 S or 4S? Ever crossed your mind "wish I had a turbo"?
Or is it more than enough?
Regards.

Nope, for public driving.
More than enough... you just need to know how to use it.
If your only experience with "power" is a low end torque V8 type of car then learn to use the higher RPM power band of the Boxer engine. The car behaves much differently than the one that most people think they are driving..
Specs are often meaningless but consider (for public road use) that it is a car with 400Hp, < 4 second 0 to 60 and a top speed of 189 mph.
Do I wish I had a turbo.. of course I do.. .but not because I think a C2S or C4S is to slow..

Considering that where I live (Virginia) I can get thrown in jail with a criminal charge on every road in the state before 2nd gear of 7 is fully wound out, the "S" is plenty. Truth be told, for 90% of all drivers, 400 HP is a handful and exceeds their 10/10 capabilities even on the track.
I used to think the same thing. Is 10" really enough ?? Maybe 12-14" would be better?
At the end of the day, it still gets the job done
Yes, I think the S is enough! At some point, you should be happy with what you have.

I think power is rather addicting. I've owned alot of different variants of Porsches from the base levels all the way up to the turbos. Done my fair share of DE's and such...
Even when I had the turbo, I was thinking "man I wish this had a bit more pep." My advice is be content with what you have because it's probably more car and better then most out on the road.

Not sure what part of Portugal you're in. I know speed limits are higher there (compared to the US) but highways are limited. Having said that, my 4S is more than I can handle on the streets and on the track.

For the street, my CS2 has more than plenty of power. In fact, I would probably get a base C2 if I wanted it as a DD primarily. On the track, 400 is certainly sufficient, but another 100HP and 150 torque would be fine with me as well.
As an example, I was WOT down a long straight and a race prepped Ferrari F430 drove right by me, at probably 15-20mph faster. I could almost stay with him in the turns (he had track tires, and I did not) but down the straights he was just gone. Plenty of Corvette's have a lot more power too, which can be put to good use on the track.
However, I can't complain about the CS2 being under powered on the track. It has a great balance of handling, braking (with upgraded pads and fluid) and power. On the street, it is hard to find a place to use all the power it has.

My 991 S is the lowest HP car I've owned in 10 years! So, yes, I would say I would like some more power! I am spoiled/ruined from my previous vehicles.
However, I do feel that my car is pretty damn quick for the power it is 'supposed' to be making, I think it's a bit under rated in my opinon. And it handles and drives better than all the rest!

Yeah, it isn't about raw HP or torque.. It is about a physics problem and the ratio of HP or torque to weight is what matters ..
Absolute HP or torque values without the weight of the car considered are completely meaningless. 75 HP bolted to a 3 lb skateboard would be more powerful than anything in existence...
Many of the those higher HP V8's etc. are in heavier cars and are apple and orange comparisons.
Also there will always be the impression a 911/S is slower because the HP and torque are developed at higher RPMs. Almost a pointless conversation until one truly gets it..
There was a time when I thought my 991 was kinda slow. . then I realized just how fast I was accidentally getting to 100 mph thinking I was really only doing about 80.. The smoothness fools you..
Then again, I predict another 75 troll posts on the subject who are convinced a Prius could outrun a 911S..

20 over the limit OR over 80mph can get you charged with that automatically - yes, even on a 70mph highway, and it actually happens. So yeah, we can be driving "recklessly" in seconds, and certainly while still in 2nd gear! Crazy... But I find my C2 is fast enough, drives just perfectly on the back roads here, and is still more overall power than I can use on public roads without looking at major legal problems.
Of course, if you're living in Germany, I'd say go for broke.

As an aside, while high speed driving on the Autobahn is anything but relaxing to me, I was just over there driving in a really sluggish rental* and noticed that the driving I was doing on the unrestricted sections was actually probably the most focused I've done on a highway while still feeling relaxed - this at about 100-105mph. Not having to scan ahead looking for cops and not having to watch the speedometer to avoid potentially getting a ticket means you can much more time watching the road and traffic. It really brought home how much better the driving here in the US could be if we weren't all being viewed as cash sources for the various local governments here.
Of course, at 140mph, I found it was the opposite because I was constantly scanning ahead for cars that might pull out in front of me - and they often do despite the more strict rules there, particularly the slow little cars that have no business (other than jealously?) doing so. Risking causing an accident by not looking in the rear-view mirror - and to overtake a truck at 1kph - is just asinine.
* (Ford C-Max, with a v-max of 112 downhill, at least that's all I could coax out of it, and it didn't feel comfortable doing that. 140 was in a 7-series some years back, not in the C-Max.
)
The S or 4S is more car than you need. I am coming out of a C2 to a Turbo and my 3.4 was a lot of fun to drive and could easily you into trouble quickly. Part of me will miss winding the motor out and running the gears in PDK.
