There are a couple of things that tend to be a bit oversold with the Opti-Coat type products. First, they are not 'completely' immune to all forms of defects. Though more resistant, it's still possible to get etching from bad bird bombs, sap attacks, acid rain, scratching, etc. and if you do you need to attend to the defect properly, which includes polishing with an abrasive. And when you do, this removes the Opti-Coat. So you are looking at a relatively expensive re-application for that area. So just know that you can't completely ignore your paint care regimen.

Second, if you are unlucky enough to need any type of paintwork on your car then it is absolutely imperative that you let the body shop know. Opti-Coat type sealants play havoc with paint adhesion. Its critical that the sealant be removed from the panel in question and surrounding panels so it doesn't contaminate the paint adhesion and flow characteristics during application. It's harder to thoroughly remove all traces of the sealant than you think.

The Opti-Coat products are an interesting technology but just know they aren't perfect and you still need to care for the finish to get the best out of the product. All the rules you've come to know for paint care still apply.

Agree. Always thought I was on the bleeding edge with new technology, but for some reason, I am not sure would put these products on my classic cars, or even my newer GT3 . Maybe daily driver. While at Pebble and Carmel concours last week, none of the owners, nor detailers would use these products. And because of all the preparation they do on the show cars, the traditional high end waxes looked spectacular.

I do know some folks even use it over the clear film; know it is tested, but for me, its still like beta software. Could be great, but not in first in line to use it.

That all said, I have seen this product applied, and the cars looked spectacular. How it holds up, polish off scratches, remove oxidation over time, is questionable.
