A/C expansion/contraction noises

Hello I have recently noticed a noise coming from under the driver side footwell. The noise sounds like something is contracting/expanding. It is more prominent after the A/C has been running. And if I push the accelerator it is even more evident. I heard that low freon may cause this.

Has anyone experience this and can give me some insight? The nearest dealership is 2.5 hours away so I'm hoping to avoid a trip.

Is it something new? If it is indeed something that has just started occurring probably not a bad thing to get looked at.

But lots of things can cause noises.

As for low Freon (it isn't Freon anymore), when you have a leak in the system yeah you can get air in the line.. Although I'm not familiar with a difference in sound unless it was a catastrophic failure.

If you did have a refrigerant problem it would most likely be cause by a failed fitting or compressor problem. And I suspect if it was bad enough to cause a new sound you would experience a reduction in air conditioning performance.

Also near the expansion coils (which are in the cabin) there is also condensation runoff as well. Sometimes when it is humid and more water condensation is collected you will hear that running off as well. I've had issues on other cars where the output tube was clogged so the condensation liquid backed up.

But the expansion coils get cold and they are metal so noises do happen.

If the sound is new and always happens or if you are seeing a change in your air conditioning performance then yeah get it in. If it has always been there and you are now just noticing it I'd wait until the next time I had it serviced.

Sounds stupid but I'm not sure if it is new or not. I just noticed it after trying to hunt down another rattle. Once I noticed it of course I'm always looking for it now. And with SPE one tends to not hear other noises .

A/C seems to work just fine. Odd thing is when I have my head in the footwell, giving it gas will create a more obvious sound. So not sure if it's the A/C. Not sure of anything

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about it. Next time you go for service point it out..

I had a similar problem (same place) and it sounded worse when the A/C was on and very cold. I also suspected a contraction/expansion issue but it ended up being the following:

The end of the infamous driver side dashboard squeak

While I had the car serviced, I asked the dealership to check on the squeak I have had intermittently on the driver side of the dash. Last time I asked them to take a look at it, the squeak had mysteriously disappeared

No such thing this time, and it turns out that it was due to the gas tank foam pads that had moved out of position and were rubbing against the firewall. Here's what was written on the invoice (this issue was covered by the warranty of course):

The service advisor told me they have seen a similar problem on several 981/991's over the past few months. Good thing in a sense that it is now a well identified and known problem. There is nothing more irritating than a rattle or squeak you keep chasing without resolution.

This fix worked great and the car is now Squeak/rattle free I feel like I am in love with it again

This really helps and I'll mention it to the service advisor and see what he thinks.

Also I'm guessing this is not a DIY kind of fix. Still trying to avoid the 2.5 hour drive lol

Exactly same thing for me. It took them 2 days to find it and fix it. My car is also squeak and rattle free.
