Awd to rwd fuse conversion
Awd to rwd fuse conversion
Hello,
I was told that there is a fuse to cut power to the front wheels. Has anyone heard about this and will it cause damage?
I was told by a pretty reliable source ( that must stay anonymous) that this can be done and causes no damage.
I do not know what fuse it is btw. Does anyone know anything about this?

But more importantly, why would you want to do this? To eliminate any power going to the front drive for some reason? Not sure that makes any sense given how the all wheel drive platform works. Nearly all power goes to the rear in my experience (I have a '14 C4S) until I am in a situation where some power needs to give the front some grip.... So effectively you have an RWD car much of the time.
What is your project?

Take a look in your owners manual... Pages 258 thru 260 list all the fuse box slots and indication of what purpose they serve. I see at least two fuse positions that serve "Allwheel Control Unit"(panel in passenger footwell, Rows B and D). You could pull one or both and see what effect it has.... But there isn't one labeled RWD or FWD for that matter. The AWD Control Unit is likely on the CAN BUS, receives telemetry from other controllers regarding power, wheel speed at the rear, steering angle and what not, and adjusts power to the front drive as needed. Eliminating the control unit effectively stops that all from happening.

Dont get me wrong I love the stock system alot. Just wanted to play around with full time rwd and feel how the difference was. There is nothing like a full time rwd. (My opinion)
+1 to Plenum's response. I wouldn't do it. Disconnecting the system doesn't turn the car into a perfect RWD system, and there are dozens of systems that will still be working as if the car were AWD. What you will feel is not going to be a true RWD experience, and the workaround won't be worth it.
If you're serious about doing this - there is a lot of knowledge on the topic in the 997 forum.
I think a RWD Turbo would be a lot of fun, think GT2.
Good luck and let us know how it turns out. I'm rooting for you.

to go to true RWD, you would have to gut the front system. Even disconnected, you will still have a lot of drag from all of the parts still turning if you don't. I've got a friend that did it on his older turbo track car, and it wasn't a cheap proposition.
