911 Refresh Officially Announced
I agree too. I had a GTR that was beyond fast and traded for a new 991 GTS NA car. I thought the same thing. If I wanted a fast turbo Porsche. I would just get a 911 Turbo.
Sounds a bit like the old air-cooled / water-cooled arguments and how all the new Porsche would be a worse Porsche... Any of you guys still have issues with water cooling?
And again... I'm sure Porsche will just get this so wrong that the 991.2 will sound terrible and will drive like an old turbo Audi with tons of lag, the engine will have lower revs. Yes, I am sure they will get this so wrong on the model they sell the most of because Porsche has a history of doing these types of f*ckups over and over. Sheesh... how did they ever stay in business?
Every time a new 911 comes out someone has to make an argument that the current latest 911 is the best and there will never be a better one. If only Porsche listened to you guys!

Mine is more about the NA sound and not caring about inline power so much. I just got back from CO 3 weeks ago and the Porsche engineers were there testing the new cars in the mountains. I talked to them for 15 mins and the one software engineer told me he wasn't sure how the public would like the new sound.
He was in a Carrera with the PSE. I asked if he would start the new car so I could hear it. He goes we are leaving in 5 mins. So I waited and heard it. Reminded me of a 911 turbo. They are great cars but its just what people like and what fits their tastes and needs I guess. Time will tell.
I'm sure TurboS being twice the cost and 10 times as rare has nothing to do with it... It's the sound. Got it.

We all know this issue about turbos being forced upon us isn't just limited to Porsche---however it is the brand we speak of at the moment. It has nothing to do with old air vs water cooling argument whatsoever. One of HarleyDavidson's biggest problems is they are celebrating an air cooled engine that is eclipsed by the engine in their water-cooled V-Rod, and yet the old timers sniff disapprovingly at it and worship those lurching, ugly sounding, overheating air-cooled idols. FWIW, I was glad when Porsche went to water cooling. But I digress.
The TurboS is a massively amazing car, and likely the best sounding TurboS they have ever made (adding an aftermarket exhaust). I just don't want to be forced to drive a turbo-powered 911 (or ANY Porsche for that matter) at ANY price point. And yes, I'm talking about SOUND....I don't care for the MB and BMW engines because of muted nature of exhaust due to the turbos. So what? that's my choice, and it's a part of the Porsche experience that is soon to disappear due to out of control regulations that no longer really are designed for any reason except for eliminating the internal combustion engine. Today's engines run astronomically clean...but nobody is supposed to know that.
Enzo Ferrari swore they'd never use FI... and they are now, but not in all their cars....yet. Yes, there ARE advantages with turbos- especially in low end torque for starters, so if Porsche can make 'em sound good my hat's off to them. We'll see. Being that the California T's engine isn't a bad sounding turbo unit, maybe Porsche will pull the rabbit out of the hat....time will tell. There is a company that makes a great turbo kit for the Cayman that sounds pretty impressive. If Porsche could equal that, they'd have something pretty cool.

Have you checked the prices of air cooled 911s lately?
I don't even know where to start... lol
Have you seen a price of a Ford model T lately? We are discussing progression and performance, not resale values of well maintained antique automobiles.

I rode an older HD. Nothing cool about it other than what you convince yourself of (smell of gas and ringing in your ear). My newer bikes were so much better in every respect. Yeah, old timers will decry new advancements... but more people will embrace them, because logically progression is better for automobiles. At least for the last century or so and I doubt they're going to ruin it within the next decade or two.
I also want to say that I AGREE with everyone that sound IS important on a Porsche. I had a PSE with high flow cats on my 997 and I have secondary cats removed on my Cayenne Turbo.
All I'm saying is that I don't think that Porsche is going to get this wrong, and that new engines are going to finally have the HP and TQ numbers worthy of 6 figure dollars.

DirtyVegas- VERY WELL SAID. Well, after some soul searching, and some careful OBJECTIVE listening- there seems to be some significant hope with the sound of the new turbo engine...no it doesn't sound purely like a NA engine...but from the videos it does sound good. I suppose each of us have to weigh just want is important.
Having said that, as a few here have pointed out, the turbos certainly open up a whole new vista regarding the achillies' heel of the NA flat-6...the lack of low-end torque...and yes, now any new 911 owner can say "I own a Turbo Porsche" yadda yadda...lololololol
Videos lack so much in capturing sound, but yep it seems to much more NA-like (IMO) than a 991 TurboS and quite, NA Porsche-like overall in that Laguna Seca Video. Even without the Sport Exhaust, mind you.
I would agree that the vertical louvers aren't that great (aftermarket solution anybody?) but do like the overall rear styling tweaks, tough. INTERESTING STUFF...good heavens methinks I've been assimilated.
