Battery charger

The weather in the north east has been great and I'm still using my 991 daily. However I figure come January it will be spending the majority of its days in the garage for about 3 month. I am well aware that earlier 911s need a battery charger during the cold months especially if just sitting. Is this still the case with a 991? My father, long time pca member 30 plus years, recommends the CTEK charger. He uses this for his 997. Seems very reasonable in price. However is it really necessary for the 991. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks - Nick

I put mine on a charger anytime I am leaving it for a week or more, the newer cars always have a drain on the battery, good to keep it up. I also use the CTek

I agree. I have a CTek (the Porsche named one that the dealer gave me on delivery) hooked up whenever I think I won't be using the car for more than a week. I forgot last fall one time and in a couple of weeks couldn't start it without charging. Cheap insurance.

I asked about this with my service manager. He said that the 991 uses a different type of battery than the previous gens and not to worry unless it's a really long time. I routinely leave mine for weeks at a time without being cranked and haven't had any issues. The longest has been a month as I travel out of town a lot. I was a little worried, but she cranked right up when I returned.

I slap a battery tender on it monthly just for insurance.

It seems battery is always on in these cars, due to various checks the car does due to all the electronics in the car. In cold weather, the car battery drains more. The manual states that if car has not been used for 4-6 weeks, you should have a charger on the car. So answer is, if you will not be using car in the winter months, you will need a charger.

I keep a few things on a tender year around. Lawn tractor, Motorcycle and at least one car when I'm not driving it.

I use one of these babies and it works great. Just install pigtails on my toys and plug them in.

Get the CTEK charger.. You don't have to buy it from porsche.. You can get one of the models on Amazon and it works very nicely. I use the same one on several of my cars.

I live in CA, so it isn't cold but I often travel and leave mine in the garage for 3 weeks at a time.. I'm still on my first battery (2014 model) Haven't had any problems with battery being flat yet. I've been told that sometimes not locking helps a little since there are monitoring functions but I've done it both ways and not had a problem.

No, you do not need a charger.

You just need to lock your car and keep the keys far from the car (like in your room, not in the garage), or else the keys will stay in constant communication and drain the battery.

You can leave the car like this for months, according to my Porsche service advisor.

I would agree that you "probably" don't need it. That said it just depends how you use the car.. it probably isn't too many months..

I've got an audi that sits in the drive way and without starting occasionally it will end up dead. And leave it flat long enough and the battery is shot. So having a trickle on it has proven to make my life easier as I don't always remember to start it periodically.

That said, I like the CTEK, and find it useful just in general independent of the Porsche. It is small and Handy for charging up a battery when I've left the lights on and don't want to juggle jumping the car. Can be quickly connected and a couple hours later it is charged up enough for a start.

It is small and handy, I think I only paid about $60 or $70 for it (not from Porsche). so it was worth it even if only used on occasion.

I always use my battery tender while in winter storage. What's the harm?
