Quick DIY painted keys

Quick diy for the bored ones. Mine and hers keys as they dry and the final product

All acrylic from tamiya. Prefer spray to airbrush, the former can be rather runny against the primer. Follow label instructions

White prime, 2 thin layers
Wait 10-15 mins

Acrylic paint, 4 layers increasing thickness towards the end, around 5 mins apart

Wait 10 mins

3-4 layers of acrylic lacquer, thin coats going to medium at the end. I used fast dry, can touch in about 10 mins

Given multiple layers, I left in the sun two days in a row, retrieving at night to avoid condensation

I avoided enamel paint given it needs time to cure rather than dry, can easily leave a tacky finish, dust magnet. The copper one I added another layer to even things a bit.

Total cost, about $15 per key, likely less. Clear advantage to choose whatever color you want and save some bucks...

I also did the start **** in mica red, similar steps

Next, the rear apron...

Cheers!

Nice job, but you know you can buy the fob blades from ebay for about $11, and you don't have to wait for the paint to dry

Those are made in China, I read some nasty things about them. I did consider anyways but there's some pleasure on diy, besides the cheapness

What is nasty about the blades made in China?

I read that they don't last long and you can expect chipping from the get go. Fit and finish is also allegedly subpar. I never bought one, so it's just what I read.

Curious to know what people who have them say. At the Porsche option cost if China is a viable option it would be a way to go. If as you have read they break, then not so much so.

The OP must be working with Chinese blade though, unless you can buy them directly from Porsche?

Your DIY covers look excellent!

FWIW, I am impressed with my cheap Chinese key covers. Perfect fit, no chipping (color all the way through), no scratching and very durable. Throw 'em in the key drawer every night! I've had them over a year and a half now.

Those look awesome, very nice combo.

Once my diy starts chipping I might just cave in and go Chinese... as I said, it's an easy diy. It's cool to get to a store and choose the colors you'd like among dozens of options.

It may set a learning curve to paint other parts of the car such as the lower portion of the mirror and rear apron, though far tougher... another idea is the inner portion of the door handle, normally black. Some vendors sell that piece in carbon fiber. Gotta keep it tasteful, easy to go ricer...

I guess I'm bored waiting for a tune for my car ...

Nice job.
I have China ones in Guards Red and Sapphire Blue. Dropped keys several times never got a chip and perfect fit.

I don't get the "change only once" issue. I've changed mine and it is a no brainer and doesn't affect any of the internal components.

I bought white ones also on eBay from China. Had about 4 months. Alway keep key in my pocket then one day took the key out of my pocket to put it away and one side had split and the oTher was cracked. For the few bucks it was worth a try. Btw, the plastic was very thin. Oh well.
