Surprised the hell out of me!
I think 2 or 3 times before I post and then I say no way. Forums can be vicious.
To the OP: I can easily understand on an open road, perfect conditions, no one else around, letting the horse run or giving it a pop, and being surprised to find you're doing in the 130s instead of just over 100. Especially so with the TTS; 580 is a lot of horse. I hear the joy, wonder and desire to share in your post; please consider your experience validated!
Sorry
I'm going to be 'ol Henry Kissinger here and just say I'm very happy to be here on this forum, and folks have their own opinions...can't change it, why worry about it...
For me the PTT I had was the one I really had to watch getting up over 100 mph, that thing was like a rocket, and it was quieter to boot-
The GTS I feel the speed more, but it's still damn quick over 100 mph. Contrary to what some people say, I actually love the Power Kit.

I totally understand the OP. On my 997.2 I hit 200 km/hr (124 mph) without totally realizing it on a side road (no traffic). As soon as I realized I backed right off as lots can go wrong really quickly. I get it.
So, I was driving in the land of cars and stars enroute to the desert this morning and everything with the car felt perfect...it was at that point I saw my speed was 134 mph! Honestly caught me off guard and it felt like I could have taken the car much faster...I didn't! I'm sure this is not an uncommon experience with these cars, but a first for me.
Yeah, I can completely see how this could happen. I haven't quite done 134, but more than once I found myself at about 115 without realizing it. Fastest I've been is about 140 for a short burst which was out in the middle of no-where in the desert and the stability at that speed was just amazing.
The car is just so smooth and stable at high speed, you can barely sense just how fast you are going.
So, here's the thing. I was hoping to convey the quickness of the car. The GTS isn't my first Porsche rodeo...I've owned a total of 5 Porsche cars so far...and, frankly, I'm always on sensory alert when I'm driving principally because of the tendency of other drivers not to see me. What I was trying to convey in my post was how quickly this car accelerates...whether from a stand still or at speed...and what is most amazing/disconcerting is the planted and settled feel of the car at higher speeds. It's not just fast but really quick.
And yes, I can't count the number if times I've looked down during normal driving and though... "oh sh**"..... and am at 95 thinking I was probably at 70... Amazingly no tickets after 3 years in the model.
I took you seriously. But having lived in Germany, I can tell you that NEVER do you just happen upon 134 mph as if totally caught by surprise. It takes concerted effort, heavy on the gas, and it's very sensational. As in, engine noise, wind noise, constant steering movements, etc. i could see 100 mph catching someone off guard on a desert road that doesn't give the driver much sense of speed, but if you didn't notice you were at 134 then I'd say your senses aren't very sharp. Of course when I think 134 mph, I more think in terms of sustained speed, not just hit it and quit it. My mark is 195 mph. All legal in Germany, and on a road I knew like the back of my hand. You really need to know how a car behaves at speed especially so you can control weight shift before making steering inputs, etc.
Nonetheless, cool that you went 134. And yes, you had lots left. Be SAFE out there!! You should go to Germany, rent a 911 and really see what the car is capable of. It's too dangerous to go fast in the US. I felt safer at 130 mph (comfortable Autobahn cruising speed) in Germany than I do at 80 here in the US. Germans are predictable and know how to drive.

I don't completely share the same feeling about 134.. That speed is fast but when out in an area with few visual references other than the road itself (such as the desert) the sensation of speed is much less, especially in a very stable car such as a 991. So I can see how the OP got there..
But I do completely share your view of German vs American (or the rest of the world for that matter). I find driving the Autobahn so much less stressful on road trips simply because it is predictable (unless you get someone from France on the road in the left lane in one of those funky campers or trailers they have lol)
I wish somehow the rest of the world could learn to stay the hell out of the left lane except when passing and never ever (did is say never?) pass on the right.. Unfortunately in the US, you have no choice to do so unless you want to drive in the #1 lane at 65 behind some guy in a Prius or a Volt who feels entitled to be there because that is the posted speed limit.... Doesn't care that there are 20 cars behind him..

To all...it's kind of like that saying, "when you turn your car on does it return the favor?" I think a significant part of owning these kinds of rides is the sensory experience...what we hear, see, and feel...and sometimes, we can just be sitting still or stuck in traffic and be experiencing joy. My 911 GTS really did surprise the hell out of me. For others, what I experienced may just be mundane...just another day in the ride. But that's cool too. It's the fact that these cars can always be counted on to return the favor is what makes them so special.
