My 991.2S track experience (hint: it was amazing)
SubscribeHey folks,
Finally got to take my new-to-me 991.2 S to the track at Buttonwillow . Big props to SpeedVentures for running such smooth, well-organized and fun track events.
This was my 4th time at Buttonwillow. I took my 1986 911 there, then my 2008 997S and my 997.2 4S. Now I got to experience what the 991.2 had to offer. Was it going to be faster? More planted? Quicker out of the corners? More stable under heavy breaking? Was the turbo engine/lag gonna ruin the fun? In short, the car was AMAZING! My final time CCW was a 2:19 which compared to drivers who actually know what they are doing, is a bad time. BUT for me it was 6 secs quicker compared to my 997.2 4S. Next time I'm getting an instructor -- I can do way better
The car felt super quick. No turbo lag that I could tell. Pulling out of any slow corner was a blast since the added torque just launched the car no matter what gear I was in. Sometimes I swear the PDK would shift from 2nd to 3rd mid-corner and I would still pull very strong coming out of it. It gave me a ton of confidence. On the straight it just felt so fast. The sound was very good -- the car was in Sports Plus mode with the Sports Exhaust on. The breaking felt a lot better -- it was a 97 degrees and the brakes never got spongy. The tires, Pilot Sport 4S, were simply amazing. Never felt like they got slippery, but I'm not pushing the car as hard as more experienced drivers, so that might be why. The engine temp stayed around a 224 degrees, which surprised me. Do turbo engines run less hot? I remember my 997.2 NA engine got way hotter, I'd say at least 250 to 260.
All in all I did four 15 min sessions and they all felt great. Never felt the car was getting away from me. Never seemed like the 97 degree heat made it any less great. They were a couple of other Porsche's in the group, all super nice people. There was a Cayman GTS which got a pretty nasty engine failure message (limp mode). I hope that guy's car is ok :/ There was 991.2 GTS and GT3 and it was amazing to see how much quicker each car was. The GTS was definitely quicker than mine (duh!), but oh boy, the GT3 was just in a league of it's own. I know this sounds so obvious, but to see them side-by-side on the track, you can REALLY see and hear the difference.
Anyhoo, that's it! Thanks for reading!

Great you enjoyed your car on the track ( I was at Willow Springs this past weeked with PCA).
The 991.2 does deal well with hot temps ( but a 15 minute session is quite short too).
As you get faster, things will get hotter ( and you will also need better brake pads and tires.....)
Definently get an instructor, it will shorten your learning time and help prevent bad habits from setting it.
But the best thing is to get out there and have fun. ( although it is more enjoyable when it is cooler
)
