Oil type and viscosity recommendations

Hello fellow enthusiasts,

Joined this forum many years ago, have been distant for awhile since selling my 997 but lurking here and there. Long story short, got back into the brand 2 years ago purchasing a CPO 2015 Targa 4s, was looking for a coupe but this car checked all the boxes. It was only to be a quick ownership to bridge the gap between purchasing a new Z06. Realized there was no substitute 😉, and canceled the order on the Z06.

2 years later car is out of CPO, so I will pick up the maintenance now myself. Especially since paying $800 last year for just the oil change. Not sure if other 991 owners are maybe just cab and targa owners have paid similar but at that price it’s just ridiculous. I did it only due to the fact that the car was under warranty.

Sorry for the TMI, back to the title. What oil do you recommend and why. I’ve found some companies selling kits which I like, each company using a different oil. Normally I would just use the manufacturer’s recommendation, but after a lot of research into oil I do believe there are some that’s better.

Before I get scolded, I did do a search. Problem is that it was scattered, between years, models, etc.

Thank you in advance for any tip or suggestions, they are all welcome

I've run Motul Xcess 8100 5w/40 in many of my cars including my tuned 997 turbo. I believe it to be one of the best oils based on all of my research and reading about oil comparisons over the years. Problem with oil questions is that everyone has their favorite and swears by it. I'd say just pick a high-quality synthetic oil, Motul, Redline, LiquiMoly and just religiously change it every 5k miles. Do not follow the ridiculous 10k intervals Porsche specs. The oil changes on these cars, like the 997 turbo are very easy and it give you a chance to crawl under the car to inspect everything else while you're under there. Easiest DIY you can do on these cars.

Driven DI40 5W-40 is worth a shot. Grab a kit from Pelican Parts (around 7.9 quarts needed) with a Mahle filter, and torque the drain plug to 37 ft-lbs. Saves you a bundle over that $800 dealer hit!

Thank you both for the responses. I ended up buying the oil change kit from FCP euro. Their kit came with Liqui Moly. From all the reading I did, seems like a good oil.

I do have a lift in my garage so it did make it easier for me. I know my way around cars and have been doing maintenance on my other cars, first time on a Porsche besides doing my exhaust . For anyone reading this, it was very easy, and took me 2 hours which included changing the cabin air filters, and I let it sit and drain till it stopped dripping. I don’t mind spending the $$$ when it’s justified, I was ready to pay $600 but $800 is just crazy. So just for comparison, I believe I spent around $800-$900 and got an oil change kit, both cabin air filters, idler and tensioner pulley, belt tensioner shock, serpentine belt and oil drain catch (for use with the lift), and a computer to reset the maintenance indicator.

FYI for 991.1 owners who don’t already know, the belt tensioner shock, pulley and idler pulley should be replaced at 10 years. Unsure of the mileage interval. I’ve read these are problematic items. My car has 33k on it, belt looks ok, Belt tensioner shock looks like it may have had a slight leak at one point but nothing at this time. Items mentioned will be my winter project.

Cheers 🍻

Hey — I landed on this after reading a messy forum argument about whether AI flirting can feel “human” or just scripted. I got curious and tried setting a simple vibe with clear boundaries, then slipped into ai bot joi halfway through my little experiment. What surprised me was how quickly the replies matched the tone I asked for instead of derailing into random lines. I kept it light, a bit teasing, and it didn’t push past what I wrote. I closed the tab satisfied, mostly because it felt like steering a scene, not fighting a chatbot.
