Newbie question... oil?

I've had my car for 3 weeks / 2000 miles and it's eaten up quite a lot of oil. What brand of oil is recommended that I can find at walmart?

Also, I have no idea whether the oil used before was synthetic or not. Are there any consequences in mixing the two?

Try getting Mobil oil. There has been many discussions on this subject so please take my recommendation with a grain of salt. Here is a recommendation that has no salt GET THE CAR CHECKED RIGHT AWAY BECAUSE SOMETHING MAYBE SERIOUSLY WRONG LIKE RMS, BROKEN GASKET, ETC.

Aloha

RMS has already been replaced on the car.

I see a lot of recommendations for Mobil 0W40 on these forums, at the same time, I see a lot of people saying it's absolute crap.

10W40 or 05W40?

I could only find 10W40 and 15W50 so I went with the 10w40

Ronny-
Go ask Loren over at renntech.org.

I was advised to use the factory Mobile1 0w40.
Better not to guess / experiment.

Nice ride you got there-

Thanks.

After doing a bit of research it seems Mobil1 0w40 is recommended for cooler areas, 5w40 for warmer climates. or I may have that backward. Many people use 0w40, Porsche recommends 5w40. Both should work.

By "factory" you mean what porsche puts in there originally? Not a special Mobile1 0w40 formulated specially for Porsche right?

Admittedly I'm new to pcars myself- You could be right with the differences for climates.
I believe that all Mobil1 0w40 is the same. Bought mine at the auto parts store and saw the same identical bottles sitting on the shelf at Beverly Hills Porsche parts counter. Cost much less at the auto parts store..

0W40 is sometimes hard to find. I often use 10W30 or 10W40 with no issues.

Here is a link with more info on oil.....

I asked Loren, over at renntech.org. Guy sure knows his stuff... I asked him to concerning the oil/climate question(0W40 for colder climates, 5W40 for warmer). His answer:

Roughly yes.
IMHO the difference between 0W and 5W is so small it is almost meaningless.
Unless you live in Alaska I wouldn't worry about it.

ronny, i am going through somewhat of the same thing with my boxster and am in your neck of the woods so i know the climate. you should be able to find 0w40 mobil at advance auto parts. heck, the walmart here has it. when i first got the boxster porsche recommended mobil 1 15w50, and that is what i have been running up until recently with no adverse effects. the difference between 5 and 0w is totally negligible in nashville, especially if you aren't planning on driving it in the winter. however, 0w-40 is one of two mobil oils that has been acea a3 certified, which is very good. if you really want to know more check out www.bobistheoilguy.com

How much is between the min and max? Whatever that is divided by 2000 miles. Most of it was highway. Haven't driven it too hard, cept once.

Nope, not at all. I just freaked when I saw that thing drop to the min bar.
I'm used to the bimmer where I didn't have to top off or change it for 15K at a time.
