Advice on potential 993 upgrades?
Hi Folks,
I am new to this forum - great to find a place with fellow 993TT enthusiasts! I purchased a 1997 993TT about a year or so ago from Michale Willhoit (great guy to work with IMHO), and I love it. Polar Silver over burgundy (I can't recall the actual name of the interior color) with 16k on the clock. I have put about 1,500k since I purchased, and it truly is amazing to drive. The car is entirely stock except that the stock wheels have been polished. I am interested in purchasing some new wheels and was wondering if I can go with 19" wheels with no mods? Good idea or not? Also, I am interested in exhaust systems that would improve the sound without being obnoxious or resonate too bad on longer trips. Any advice/experience from members here would be greatly appreciated. I have looked at Fabspeed and watched their on line video, but would like to hear any testimonials from actual owners of any aftermarket exhaust systems. One last mod I am contemplating is a chip to increase power. Any feed back here would be greatly appreciated as well. And, finally, I have some reservations about any modifications to this car and what it might do to the value. Obviously, the car is wonderful, powerful, beautiful, etc., but I am the type that likes to mod and personalize. I just don't want to bring the value down. Opinions? Thanks to all for sharing your thoughts.

the rennlist board is more active when it comes to the 993tt so you'll find plenty of help there -- more so than here but to answer your questions:
1. wheels. 19's look big on a 993tt. it's a diminutive car. big fat 18's look perfect; get 315 tires in the back and you're set. offsets are important to give it an aggresive look and i went with +39 in the back with an 11 inch rim.
2. exhaust .. options here are robin suns rsr exhaust (get this from carnewal in germany with the euro being down the price point is very reasonable) or fisters turbo exhaust or fabspeed muffler bypass. im about to put the muffler bypass on and i'll let you know how that sounds -- the 50 lb pound weight savings is bonus. what i've gathered is that people either love the muffler bypass (like brian on 6speed) or hate it (like kevin from umw). if i don't like the muffler bypass im going to try robin's exhaust from carnewal.
3. i wouldn't chip the car. you'll affect the resale value and it won't add to the pleasure of driving your car.
the only mod that i would add is put on some pss10's and drop the car just a hair; the springs on your car are 15 yrs old and tired and dropping the center of gravity just a bit will make the handling better. welcome and it sounds like you picked up a beauty of a car from wilhoit. you know none of us believe anything about your car till you post pics of both the inside and outside of your car.

dfwerdoc - Thanks much for the great advice! Good point on the age/wear of the springs. I will hopefully receive some additional feedback from owners of aftermarket exhaust systems. As for the chip, I guess I will just have to live with the 400 ponies
. I have attached (at least I think I have) siome pics.

I have spent considerable time looking at wheels and considering what might look the best. Here is what I am thinking: since there is really no chrome on the car but the wheels right now, and the windows are pretty dark, I was wanting a black wheel with a bit of polish or chrome for contrast. Right now my first pick is the Victor Equipment Mulsanne. I'm just not sure if I can get them in an eighteen inch. What do you think of the wheel and how it would look on the car? If not this exact wheel, I bet I could find one similar..........any ideas?

that would look great ... i would do polished and definitely not chromed. when picking out a 3 piece wheel which is what you're describing, i would seriously look at getting a stepped lip rather than a reverse lip --- you'll have less issues with the valve stem and they're generally stronger. the down side is the centers will be an inch less in diameter and the wheels can look small in certain combination of finishes. if money is not a huge issue look at the HRE competition series. the c21's are nice. i have c93's on my 996tt and i looooove the wheels. the titanium fastners are art in themselves. other wheels worth looking at are forgeline competiton, cargraphic racing, bombacher work and bbs's. fikse also makes a great wheel with an anodized black center and allan baylis is their vp of sales and he'll make you a great deal. lots of choices for sure.
dfwerdoc,
Thanks for all the ideas! I will check out some of the other brands. I'll let you know what I end up doing.

dfwerdoc- quick question: advantages to 3 piece, monoblock and different types of wheels? I put BST carbon fiber wheels on my Ducati and love them. Unbelievable difference. Would CF have a fit here?
Get the fabspeed muffler bypasses. Sound perfect, light and you can put em on yourself
18" wheels are perfect size. I went with 3 pc i-forged with black centers and polished lip.

the advantange of a 3 piece wheel is that you can pick different finishes for various parts of the wheel and everything can be custom including types of fastners and size and dish depth. also if you bend the rim you can get the rim replace and use your same centers. disadvantage is generally strength and weight compared to monoblocks but all that has changed with all the manufactures coming out with their competition series. monoblocks: way more limited in styles and finish and width when it comes to 18 inch wheels. wouldn't do cf. the state of the art for cf wheels is still not there with respect to durability --- they're 10 grand for a set and if you end up with road rash, they'll be expensive to replace, the turnaround time will be brutally long. check out dpe wheels; i have a bit of a connection there. i paid 3700 for some dpe monoblocks and 6200 for my hre c93. both wheels i love. the forgelines are in between the two in price. if you need me to put you in contact with the guy at dpe let me know. here's a pic of the hre c93's with my 993tt in the background:

While I know color rendering on computers is inconsistent, are you sure your car is Polar silver and not Arctic silver? It doesn't look bluish enough for Polar.
You have a stunning looking car there. I keep tempting myself by looking at 993TT's, even though I have a 06 C2S cab that I love. BTW, I have (19") forged Champion RGB wheels, and love them. That style, perhaps in 18", on a TT looks great. Enjoy.
