Question on Tiptronics - Anyone have experience - input?

Does anyone here have any experience with Porsche tiptronic? I've never had a good impression of automatics in sports cars but I got an email from a guy who wants to make me a deal on a 96 Carrera. I'm thinking "no" as it seems strange in a Porsche - I've had a 5 speed and a 6 speed (SC and 996 respectively). Any input?

rufstuf is infamous around these parts
It depends on your usage. I have a 993 2S with tiptronic. It is great for commuting and touring. I have done a number of autox and has been as competitive as other cars in my class. That being said, a major beef that I have about driving a tip in manual mode is sometimes I cannot tell which gear I am in without glancing at the tiny, tiny indicator. I cannot intuitively tell which gear I am currently in by the position of the shifter. This problem is worse during a race when I am doing high rev and causing the tip to upshift automatically. Unknowingly, I would upshift without even realizing the tip has done so already. During a race I cannot afford to look down to find which gear I am in. Beside the indicator is too small for a quick check anyway.

Thanks for the input. I've done a bit of reading since I posted this and I think what you've indicated is a major complaint, that is competitive driving and trying to figure out the gear. I'm seeing also that tiptronics are going a little cheaper than 6 speeds. I also equated this to the M3 SMG and I then started to rationalize it's probably pretty good. But the I like shifting so unless I find a really good deal I probably won't go that route. Thanks again for your information! Can't wait to make the switch back to Porsche.
