The one that got away!
Out of the 4 911's I have owned this is my favorite and of course the one I wish I still had. Don't get me wrong the 997 is a great Porsche but..
I would take a 993 over a 997.1 or 996. I have not driven one yet but think they are much better looking and from how much lighter they are, I can only imagine how they handle.
Sorry to add salt to your wound.

Thought seriously about 993 or RS America 964 when I bought 997 and instead followed the old "buy the newest you can afford" rule. Figured since I'm getting older and those cars can be such a handful for daily driving I would just get the newer, softer 911.
I still have a blast driving the 997 and it brings a smile to my face everyday.

And it looks very nicely setup.

Never too late, plenty of people return back to the 993s. It's a great balance of old and new!
My first Porsche was almost a '97 C4S but at the last minute I went with an '01 C4. For me it's a simple matter of size. I'm 6'4 and don't fit comfortably in a 993. Personally I think the wide body models are possibly the best looking 911 they've ever made (or maybe a 964 Turbo?) and I'd love to have one if I fit comfortably and didn't have my knees jacked into the knee pad even in my best, most comfortable driving position!
My first Porsche was a 2004 C2 that I bought new from the factory (Living in Frankfurt at the time, I figured this was the best way to do things, no?)
I had that car until 2007, and loved every minute of it.
When I decided on another Porsche, I knew I wanted a 993 S model, based solely on the looks. I later decided that I wanted a '97 c2s, Arena Red Metallic, with a non-mustard interior, and an automatic. I knew I'd rather have the lighter weight and agility of the 2 over the complexity and heaviness of the 4 (also, no driving in the snow for me!)...and since I'd be commuting into DC sometimes, forget the dang 6 speed. I'd done that before and it gets old fast.
I found a great car in L.A. and it had basically everything I wanted. I would have preferred a grey interior over black...but what the hey.
As I drove the car across the country, I quickly came to realize that this Porsche was WAY different from my 2004. The car held the road tighter, and there was more feedback to the driver. (meaning, yeah...it's a little less docile than the 996). The sounds coming from the engine were more feral and the power band was different than my old/newer car.
The automatic tranny (Tiptronic) is a world of difference from the old six speed. It figures out how you are driving and adjusts the shift points depending on how aggressive you're driving. (and not just right now...if you're driving with your foot into it, the car will continue to have higher shift points for the next few minutes before returning to normal mode).
Yes, the c2s 993 is not as comfortable as my 996 was, but I bought this car to drive it. I have a stuffed sofa in my living room for being comfortable.

I've thought about getting a 993 and keeping my 997 4S. Probably a cabriolet to have that car be a fun summer day ride. My thought is drive it for a few years and get about what I paid into it back. Plus as a third car it will at best only see a few thousand miles per year. But I don't think it will drive as aggressively and powerfully as my 997, I expect it to be fun and zippy. It will be lighter and less powerful, so I expect it will bounce around the road more than my 997 4S. I actually looked at a SC car, but felt that the SC devalues the collectibility of the car.
biggest issue about "going back" to a 993, is that you cant really compare the reliability and drivability of a brand new car with warranty and all the modern amenities, to an aging platform such as the 993, yes, they are tremendously great cars and imho, the best Porsche ever made, but fact is they require much more care and maintenance now a days with their age than new porsches do, and some people are just not willing or dont have the time to attend to these duties in order to drive such a car..... hence, they just buy the "new" Pcar and be done with it.
