Clearing Emission Codes

i have a 1996 993 Cab. and it won't pass emissions tests in New York. I changed the battery and since then it's failed. I'm told the only way to clear them is a long complcated driving sequence. I have the driving sequence but was wondering if anyone knows another way to clear the codes.

You can ask teh dealer ot clear teh codes for you. You could also purchase a OBDII scanner/reader that can has the option to reset codes.

No CEL. I don't think the OBD 11 scanner will clear the codes. They are emission codes that were caused when i changed the battery and the computer was without power. It's a real PITA. There's gotta be a better way to clear them then driving around doing all kinds of speed and RPM changes.

Bruce, they are not emmissions codes that you are trying to "clear", you need to reset them. The system has "readiness" codes that need to sequence before they will return to a completed status (a systems check if you will). I have found that just driving the car at constant freeway speeds of 75 mph+ for 50+ miles usually works.I tried all the other ways that the check stations print out but they don't work!

"Readiness" codes, right I couldn't remember that word. My dealer gave me the driving sequence. I'll try the freeway thing, that would be an easy fix. What are you supposed to do when your battery dies.

Nothing you can do other than keep a trickle charger on it so you don't loose battery. I have the 993's dreaded SAI code that pops up all the time, and I just clear the codes and go for a ride. If you have emissions tests you have to pass yearly or bi-yearly, I wouldn't mess with the codes until that time. You may actually find that you set them during the course of months of normal driving. AT worst you can get a waiver from the DMV (check your states procedure on that) which will give you a "pass".

As Chris said above it is a readiness code issue. I had the same that would not even clear after doing the god awful "sequence" or 2000 miles of driving. Sometimes these codes just won't clear and it's a PITA. I failed smog as well due to these codes and had to eventually go to a smog referee (sp?) to pass me. I'm not sure if NY has a smog ref but I'm sure they've got some kind of state run agency whom you can go to. Good luck

Thanks guys, it's definetely a big PITA. I'll try checking with NY state and see what i can do. I had a trickle charger on it, the battery just went. Gotta love modern technology.

Just go for a 200 mile non stop, constant speed run down the hiway.....you'll reset them and be fine. Then hurry and find an inspection station

LOL......good luck with it. Let us know how it goes. If a CEL is going to come on it should happen within the first 50-60 miles.
