Redline the car each time I drive it?? Input please!
AT a car meet this weekend, a porsche driver was telling me that I should redline the car each time I drive it. I got it to 7200rpm on the weekend drive. Do you guys agree? open it up each time? Better for the engine than not reving high rpm?
Yes. See threads on RPMs and "lugging" on Rennlist. Long and short of it, try and run the engine consistently above 4k RPM and redline occasionally, but once every time you take out the beast. Never "lug".
I do try to keep it over 3k as I run. It is just so different than any other car I have owned and want to keep it happy. I was afraid to go over 7k and know that the car has a rev limiter, so it was meant to rev. I will look for the items you mentioned on rennlist. what is considered lugging? I also hear that not driving them enough is a problem. Although my car is new to me, I try to drive it couple of times a week.
I just wanted to add that I just sent it to 7k on a 2nd or 3rd gear shift. I dont hold any rpm's over 5k. I want to drive it to its potential but dont want to blow it up. The car had a top end rebuild in '99.
You'll be fine. P-cars were ment to be driven not babied. Once it's warmed up enjoy it. I've owned my 993 for 6+ years and take it to redline almost everytime I drive it (on ramps are an mans best friend
). Don't be scared porshes are stout cars.

Lugging is having the car in too high a gear and then mashing the throttle. The RPMs are too low and the engine has too be close to WOT, despite the low revs.
very true on the older 911's. but on the new ones i would question the point of it. I've heard that it will prevent carbon building for the OBDII cars, but that aside i don't think of it as overly theraputic for the car. For the driver - SURE.
I also don't believe (so long as you warmed it up and your hydraulic valves are nice lubed) it has any adverse effects. These cars are built to be driven - SO ENJOY.
