Rear 5mph Bumpers...
When doing the GT2 bumper, I pulled off the 5mph bar and protection behind (it was a few bolts) and saved about 25 pounds. I figured I'd try the same on the rear. Anyone done this? Just wondering where the rear bumperettes would go and if they would still work ok if I stipped 'em... or do I need a Euro rear bumper?
TIA

ROFL... I know man, these days it seems as though I'm going bling, what with the GT2 bumper stuffs...
The DIY Ghetto intake was the last thing... I'm gonna try something fun tomorrow/this week so stay tuned for that
I really do want to drop that 25 pounds of useless 5mph stuff. The Europeans don't need it and neither do I. I never drive 5mph so if I get hit it's gonna be faster than that...

Sharky,
I took the rear off yesterday. The rear 5 mph bumper actually holds part of the exhaust heat shielding in place, leading me to believe that even the euro cars have the aluminum piece sans the bumperette mounts. Without this aluminum piece in place there is nil protection for the engine in a rear contact scenario, in fact almost any impact will do serious damage.
I'll email you a couple of pictures to illustrate the point (I'd post if I knew how, feel free to post them). What we can do is leave the 5 mph dampers and have the aluminum cross-piece lightened. Leave the three holes for the heat shielding and enough material to give some protection, but certainly get rid of the bumperette mounts and probably at least half the weight of the cross piece as is. The only compromise for me really, as I'd want something across the rear even for a track-only car. Feel much safer bending over to pick up the soap that way too...
Best,
Sean

Sharkster,
You can remove the rear but you will need to get the euro bumper since the warts are held to the brackets you see in the photos below.
Keep in mind, however, that if you sustain a front or rear hit, the car will be much more damaged since the extruded aluminum braces add alot of rigidity for a hit. Think this through before doing.....

Heya Ken thanks for doing that
It's too bad that the bar itself hold the bumperettes. I was hoping maybe Eric could come up with some plug solution for them but no response yet. However, the more and more I think about it, perhaps it's not such a good idea....

You couldn't plug the holes anyway. By the look of it, Porsche makes only one bumper, the euro version. THe US version, at least mine, is clearly cut out to receive the bumper warts. They are some pretty big holes (roughly 3"x3" or larger.
