Aftermarket NAV kit
Aftermarket NAV kit
My car does not have NAV and I am thinking of putting one in, but is it possible to put a double din instead of a single din that replace the stock one? If so, is they any particular brand of retro fit kit that I should buy in order to have the best fitment when installing a double din NAV? Please share some thoughts. Thanks.
I also have an '03 and wanted to do what you are talking about. As far as fitting a double DIN unit, you just need to move the climate controls down to the bottom section where the storage bins are. Porsche sells a trim piece that will allow you to do this. The problem you will have that will prevent you from doing this at all is that the '03 996TT has the MOST fiber optic system which means you can't connect the new head unit to the Bose amps and speakers. You will have to install a whole new stereo system including speakers, amps, wiring, etc., and to get one that is as high quality as the Bose you will need to spend several thousand dollars.
If you just want NAV, I suggest getting a Garmin or other NAV device. I have the Garmin Nuvi 680 which has traffic information, bluetooth, movie times, gas station prices, and whole bunch of other features. It works great, and can be mounted somewhere that doesn't look out of place.

I am FAR from an audiophile, but the Bose system sucks. For $400 you can buy way better speakers, IMHO.
I will be installing an AVICz2 or an Alpine IVA-W205 with an NVE-N872A...sirius and bluetooth, 6 channel amp, drivers. Be done with it.
The audio and nav in my 2003M5 puts the pcm2 to shame, and the M5 is considered poor too!

I have a 2004 with the PCM2 ...which I am getting ready to yank out and replace with a real nav and real audio system.

I had already purchased an AVIC D-3 and had to return it because it wasn't doable for less than $5k. If you know of a way to do it right for less, I would be interested in hearing about it. I hate not having a reliable NAV/Bluetooth/MP3/DVD/Sirius solution in my car, but had resigned myself to not being able to do anything about it.

Agree that it will be more than 400 for speakers AND amps.
My point is that I am very underwhelmed by the bose system...that $400 would give you better drivers.
I may get surprised, but 'running new wires' is not a significant cost- unless you can't do it yourself.
Anyone found an amp that will handle the wacky bose impedances?? I'm looking at one that purportedly can deal with it... not that I'll keep them long term
