Regarding the Turbo S...
I can understand why X50 owners would be pi$$ed about the Turbo S. IMO, Porsche made a mistake by coming out with the X50 and X51 packages in the first place.
If Porsche had released this Turbo S without ever having come out with the X50, I think it would be uniformly praised as the ultimate 996 Turbo.
Also, is the PCCB setup THAT bad?? I can't imagine that Porsche would use a system on the flagship Carrera GT that was unproven or potentially a sub-optimal product.
Assuming that PCCB is NOT as bad as some would have us believe, I think the Turbo S is a pretty awesome upgrade over the base Turbo.... at least as good as the 993 Turbo S upgrade over the base 993 Turbo. More external styling differences would be nice though.
I guess I'm surprised that lots of people here seem to be bashing the Turbo S. Other than the "re-badged X50" issue, I'm not sure what's so bad about it....please feel free to educate me

Nothing is bad about the S ..... What is "bad" for X50 owners is the fact that we paid roughly $135-$150k + for a similarly equiped car 2 years ago and some even a few months ago with comperable equipment - PCCB
The only thing I think everyone including me is pissed about is our "new" resale values!
Especially someone like myself that likes to change cars every year or so

we got screwed...
FOr 130K now you get X50, PCCB, CD changer and PCM II!!
For an 03, to get a base car with those options is 116K, X50 18K, PCCB 8K, PCM II 2.6K, and CDC 0.7K bringing the total to around 145K!! Wit the S, its like youre getting the X50 for FREE!!!!!

so did non X50 buyers ... mine cost 129 without x50 and without PCCBs.
I would definitely be p.o.'d if I had gotten an X50. Not only that, the Turbo S would be MUCH more desirable and collectible without any X50's running around.
The X50/51 was really a bonehead mistake by Porsche, IMO. We all knew at the time these power kits were way over-priced, and now even moreso. Porsche has managed to simultaneously pi$$ off a bunch of X50 owners and diminish the exclusivity of the S.
IMO, it's not the release of the Turbo S that is so bad as much as it is the release of the X50/51 powerkits in the first place. Anything for money, I guess.

IMHO - these cars are money pits. We accept that going in. If you're buying a Porsche as an investment I have got some stock I'd like to sell you.
I bought an X-50, could care less what they re-badge or call anything else. I like my car. I push the accelerator and it accelerates. I've gotten my money's worth.
Buy your Ferrari/Lambo/etc - you're not going to be able to drive them every day.
Off my soap box and heading out for another run through the hills....

Let's review. Porsche pisses off some fanatics. They damage the resale market slightly. They bring in new buyers of the 996TT "S" and discourage the current TT from trading in. The Cayenne sales have been strong and despite the recalls and the JD Power ratings, sales have not dropped. So where has corporate gone wrong? We, as a free consultant group, are ignored,....mostly.

I compare this to a vacation. I "Always" have a blast while there, and I take it as often as I can....
The X-50 package was NOT a mistake at all for Porsche.
The production cost of an X-50 car is less than $1,000 more than a non X-50 car.
It took Porsche decades to come up with this high margin add-on stuff. First they called it "Exclusive Options" and they started a different department. These OPTIONS were all custom and were only offered in Germany, then it came to the US. The next step was that they productised "Exclusive Options" and put them on the price list. On your window sticker you'll see that all these "Exclusive Options" are under a separate heading.
These are all ridiculously high margin items like the silver painted interior parts. They make the interior look great but don't really cost more than a couple of bucks. They also have NO R & D expenses for Porsche.
A K-24 turbo costs only a $100 maybe $200 more than a K-16 Turbo (in the OEM world), the software is free because they have all the data from pre-production testing.
I think the X-50 package was a H U G E moneymaker for Porsche and they had parties every week because of it.
Porsche is about business. And Business is about making $$$. Porsche has been very good with making $$$, lots of it.
If you think you are done with Porsche... Think again! There will be other Killer Applications.
I have a 420 on order and am looking forward to it very much but I will not be able to drive it as much as I do the TT. So the bang for my buck is MUCH better with a TT. I put over 5,000 miles on my TT Cab since late November. I saw a TT on Ebay with over 100,000 on it and it went for $67K. That guy stretched is $$$ over 100,000 miles and I'm sure he had a ton of fun doing it.
