Range Rover Question
I just got my wife an 04 Range Rover which as we drove away from the dealer I noticed a vibration in the 50-55 mph range in the steering wheel. The service manager says that all Range Rovers have a "shimmy". This sounds like a pile of crap to me, a vibration is an indication of a problem (far too many possibilities to list). I know a bunch of you have either 03 or 04 Range Rovers and was wondering if you have experienced this and if so what was the problem. Thanks
Land Rovers have a history of this. I am sad to see that they still can't get it right. Don't take this the wrong way, but owning two Land Rovers, a Jaguar and various British made consumer goods overtime has made me a bit cynical when it comes to exports from England. The wheel shimmy is just the beginning of what is to come. It is all part of the Land Rover experience.
OK -- I have a new 04 Westminister with 20 inch alloys. My suggestion has NOTHING to do with Rovers, however. Mine is perfect in balance and alignment -- here is why
Whenever I get a new car, I make them balance all 5 wheels (including the spare) and align the car. I have found that the wheels/tires are never all balanced -- this is true of my BMW, Porsche, Mercedes, Rover, etc.
I also find that the alignment is never spot on either and tell them to do that.
I don't hassle the salesman. IN fact, I always let them know up front that I left some money on the table for them. In exchange, I ask only that they balance all the wheels and align it. For me, a few hundred dollars goes a long way. Having said that, bring it back and have them do the wheels over (watch them if need be) and get the fact that they checked the alignment in writing on the service order.
They don't "all do that." IN fact neither mine, nor my friend's nor my father-in-law's does that.
If they don't jump tell them you will trash them in the new car survey -- that will get their attention.
Good luck

I would reccomend trying to get the wheels rebalanced as stated above. This is a minimal cost and is most likely your problem. If the shimmy goes away above 60mph, then it is usually a poor wheel balance. Congrats on the beautiful Range and hope this helps.

Thanks for the Suggestions
Thanks guys, it was actually the sales manager that stated that they all shimmer, she actually asked my wife to drive her RR to confirm this. Today they said they balanced the wheels and 1 was bad so they made that one the spare (that's a problem too). My wife picks it up this morning and the problems still there. I'm taking your advice and telling thm to re-balance all 5 wheels and do an allignment. Its very frustrating when after 3 years driving a Lexus LX470 with absolutely no issues I have this crap with a brand new car. Maybe I should have gotten another Lexus.
I had an 03, and now have an 04. Neither have had that problem, or any problem for that matter. My 03, had 19's and the 04 has 20's. Fortunately the guys at my dealer are super cool, and would never bulls#$t anyone like that.
No, unfortunatly that is a pile of crap... I have had mine for quit some time and this has never come up. I really enjoy my Range Rover even though it isnt really my daily driver, but i havent noticed anything wrong with it in the 12k miles i have on it.
SORRY, to make it clearer my Range Rover is MY 03' but bought in winter 02.
