are after market wheels as good as the expensive ones?
I'll try to link the thread from Corvetteforum from a couple years ago... The HRE broke around the center. It was cause for huge debate. Maybe they fixed it, maybe not, as I didn't keep track. I know SCCA was paying attention at the time, and I know that I scratched HREs off my list of wheels to purchase.

Just make sure construction is NOT gravity cast, rather low pressure cast and or heat treated or forged. Also make sure finishes are powder coated or eurathane cleared at a minimum. We carry a few brands that are up there with top shelf makers and at a fraction of the price because we buy so many at a time.
Anybody who's in the business can agree price does NOT necc. mean quality. Many of these boutique wheels on the market are absolute trash with enormous price tags because of the marketing. Most of them are not even certified by any testing labs (ie TUV and DOT). Some makers charge more because the design, production, distribution, and marketing is all done - AND KEPT - in house. OZ and BBS are good examples. Heritage matters as well. BBS, OZ, and Rays (Volk) can all be seen on formula 1 cars so you know the quality is there. BBS and OZ both use mfg'ing techniques that are very expensive - but make wheels correctly.
Just make sure you are buying a wheel from a company with a history and that have control of the manufacturing process. Some of the most popular names out there are because of their full page magazine ads and not how well they make wheels....
