Porsche: King of the 'ring?

For reference, I’ve created a list of all of the *verified sub - 8:00 minute runs on the Nurburgring made by cars that are available in the US. They're listed from highest to lowest. As you can see….Porsche leads the pack with 8 cars.

*NOTE: I tried to use as many Sport Auto tests that I could, since they seem to be the most accurate and verifiable. I’ve also left what seem to be only manufacturer’s claims out of the list.

Also, while I have no doubt that some cars that haven’t been officially tested will run sub-8:00 minute ‘ring times all day long, without an official test I can’t add them (C5 Z06, Enzo, etc..)

Please let me know if I’m missing anything.

Here are the cars ranked by HP, lowest to highest. Porsche really seems to do more with less, and does it very consistently. Even with the heavy TT’s:

1. 996 GT3 – 381
2. 997 GT3 - 415
3. 997 GT3 RS - 415
4. 996TT – 420
5. 360 CS – 425
6. 996 GT2 – 462
7. 997TT - 480
8. GT-R – 480
9. F-430 – 490
10. Gallardo E-Gear – 500
11. C6 Z06 - 505
12. Gallardo SE – 520
13. 997 GT2 - 530
14. Gallardo Superleggera – 530
15. Ford GT - 550
16. Murcielago – 575
17. Carrera GT – 612
18. 599 GTB – 620
19. SLR – 626
20. CCR – 806
21. Veyron – 1001+

Anyway, I thought it might make for an interesting discussion.

You are probably thinking of the CLK GTR which is NOT the same car... The CLK DTM is just a juiced up CLK AMG with wider flares..

No. I am thinking about the CLK DTM. I am very familiar with both cars.
You are obviously not, as the DTM is not "just a CLK with AMG and wider flares". Do some research and come back.

Luis, it's very simple... it's cuz Mercedes is wack. Who puts an auto tranny in a car like that? This is why MB pisses me off. The car is not so light either.

For me, I'd rather have a GT2 over a CLK DTM on the race track any day. DTM is a very nice car, but it ain't a GT2.

I can come over there in the spring with a bunch of corvettes and take my car around the ring. The trip is 10k, I'm tossing if I', going or not.

As for the ring times, please dont feed the fanboys, I'm sure they are chomping at the bit to post something. And you'll know what I mean when it happens.

Since when did CLK DTM AMG officially available in US? I hope we are on the same page and talking about the car pictured below and not mistaking with the CLK Black Series, AMG just released in 07.

I was there last year. And, a year before that. And, before that.

Here's some pics (I'm in BMW),

Some misfortune at the ring posted on M3 forum, http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=151381

Ok, no need to be rude. I have driven an CLK DTM on the track and I can tell you that in my opinion it feels just like any other CLK with lots of power and upgraded suspension and brakes. But it is still heavy (1750kg/3850lbs) therefor not very fast on the track.
But still, 7.54 was considered VERY fast in ´04...

See you guys at the ring next year.

Datax,

You might be right. I may be mistaking it with the Black series. I admit that I don't follow Mercedes very closely.

Divexxtreme: the Pagani Zonda F should be included in the list. 7:33 as per the Sport Auto Supertest: http://www.supercars.net/PitLane?vie...ID=2&tID=83550

And IMHO, the 7:50 Nissan GT-R should be left out of the list until a proper Supertest is done for the car. The conditions during a Supertest is quite different than that for regular Sport Auto test test drives (no other cars on the track during a Supertest, etc. etc.).

As for the 997 GT2, all I can say is WOW. Truth be told, I used to think that it'll be impossible for it to match/exceed the time set by cars like the Zonda F and the Koenigsegg CCR with just 530bhp. I guess you're right, Porsche really is the King of the 'Ring. I think the Pilot Sport Cups also helped.

This is just a guess but the speed limiter may have something to do with it. By all accounts, it should at least be faster than the SLR McLaren if not for the MB-imposed speed limiter.
