Oakley Design Sequential Shifter?
All this is, is an extra bunch of linkage to make your original transmission
make the same H-pattern moves, in sequence, as you move the new
handle back and forth. The probability of extra clunkiness and slack, and
imprecise feel, with no real ability to speed up the shifts, seems like a
waste of money...

Apparently not. It's not only a replacement for the shifter assembly in the cabin, but replaces everything including the stock linkage. This is from one of the guys on PH who has it on his GT3:
I agree, that was one of my thoughts. This is my first Porsche, before I had a Lambo with E-Gear. Therefore when Jon showed me the system and explained it had been developed in conjunction with the Porsche factory and would convert my car very simply from H Pattern to sequential I was all ears. According to Jon Porsche were very close to fitting this as STANDARD on the GT3 and RS but due to production costs I think? they obviously didn't fit it.
The quality of the system is superb and my system looks nothing like the picture 'Chipchap' links too. The system Oakley supplied fits to the gearbox itself. That picture from 'Chipchap' looks like somthing from ***** Wonka or something! I am not on here to defend my money spent (£3950) simply saying that I am more than 100% thrilled with the system, the quality is superb. Apart from the Oakley Car my RS was the first customer car fitted with the system since it was launched. It really is Porsche quality.

Yow! Interesting! I take my cynicism back, except that
the one weak link remains the syncros, which I had to
have replaced with steel ones, which still limit how quickly
you can shift. If/when Porsche solves that, I'll be really
happy.

Speed Yellow,
100 Million $ developing a gear box?
Ease up on the egg nog!
MK
Jimmer,
It sounds pretty cool. Do you have any pictures, the original links are dead?

Yeah, there was some owner feedback on PistonHeads around Christmas if you look in the Porsche forum. Although you still have to clutch, the system itself seems pretty slick and is extremely well made. The consensus is that the benefits are rather minimal, although this certainly ensures that you never pull a 5-2 shifting blunder. I've been contemplating this myself, but IMO I have better uses for the money right now (<$10k).
I saw it in action this past weekend at Oulton Park on the Oakley Design 997 GT3RS, and it looks the part for sure. A few taps up, and a few taps down - very nice.
Here's the email reply to my query a few weeks ago:

Thanks for the enquiry, and the comment about our web site, it is being re
visited prior to Autosport, we have a large stand, complete with the Ascari
car from top gear (Uses our Sequential)Additionally we have just completed
wind tunnel testing at MIRA for our carbon parts, so we shall have a full
video of this.
As for the sequential, yes it fits; it bolts to the side of the existing
gearbox intercepting the two rod linkages, and then moves the cogs by
electro magnets.
You do have to use the clutch as normal, however the gear lever is straight
up / down as a fully sequential unit, the shifts are really fast, and it
does mean that it is impossible to miss a gear.
Its actually my favorite part as the feel good factor alone is worth it, and
I drove some 1200 miles with it and found it a dream. The cost is £3,950 +
vat, excluding fitting this takes about 8 Hrs including electrics.
If you have any further enquires about this or any other products please do
not hesitate to contact me.

Guys
I have the latest unit installed in my car as I write this response. Go to "A very custom GT2 RSR" thread elsewhere and that is the car. It is a true sequenial shift unit only! It is also electronically actuated. I have changed all gearing and synchros in the transmission. Also changed out the axle shaft output bearings and cover to much larger bearings and a heavy duty cover and have built custom 300M axles because of HP and torque. Running a new Guard GT lightweight differential and steel synchros. I can give you guys a report in about 2 months or so once we run the car. I know where to get them in Germany from the manufacturer. Oakley is only a distributor. If you are interested, we could probably buy 8 to 10 units at a bulk price basis. Let me know if you are interested in doing so. You may want to wait until I run the car and see how it performs. By the way, I did start out with a GT2 tranny.
The gear shift unit digital signal will work with the MoTec ADL2 dash as it relates to read out of the gear selection. We are using the ADL2 dash to replace the stock instrument cluster in my project car.

I think this is a waste of money. It rather spend beefing up my tranny then screwing around with a Up or down shifter... its is still a manual transmission with a clutch...
If you have more money then most I guess its a cool thing to have...

I hear ya - I thought the same thing. But after actually seeing it, believe me, on the track it seems to be a very good thing. No more missed shifts, and the **** is right up next to the steering wheel. I'm sure it results in faster lap times to some degree or another.
