Smile Weight comparison - rear engine cover + wing

I had the underside of the rear engine cover out on the TT on the 24th and was shocked to find out how heavy the motor is which drives the hydraulic struts which make the rear wing go up and down. So how heavy is a GT 2 engine cover + fixed wing unit by comparison and where is the best place to source such an item OEM or otherwise in price, weight & quality. Would fitting a GT2 unit cause check engine lights ?

I removed the engine on my Gemballa wing and I keep the wing down all the time ...yes, it is a heavy motor.

Richard, if you fit the GT2 wing you will have a wing error light on the cluster, for that you have to buy a GT2 cables to up-grade or just simply conect and desconet 2 cables, that it.

I hope its hepls

Heavy wing motor

Is there any way to remove the motor and leave the wing in the up position?

Wink

Yep that seems to make the most sense to me actually when I think about it, so I can easily take out the heavy rear wing motor and then I guess I just pull the fuse, can I do that with no check light, if so which fuse is it amongst the 25 or so that there are ? Tom you MUST have done this already ?

I was thinking with our modified cars we might need the extra down force.
That is why I wanted to leave it up and remove motor.

I ran wing down at the TX Mile to 191 mph, and it seemed fine.

Most track work (even on high speed tracks) is limited to 170 mph or so,
I have not tried a high speed oval with mine down yet, though.

Body Parts:
-Bumper Supports -20lbs each -40 lbs for both (DMK)
-Roof
-GT2 Roof Skin
-Doors
-Hood
-Stock hood 40lbs. Carbon Fiber Hood 16lbs. (luckyluke)
-Custom carbon hood 5lbs. 35lb savings. (lucky luke)
-Spoiler/Deck Lid & Carbon Fiber Roof - 35 lbs (luckyluke)
-Techart Wing, removal of wing motor mechanism - 30-35 lbs (DMK)
-Carbon /Kevlar Bumpers
-Rear Bumperrettes - 2 lbs 7 oz for the pair (Al Norton)

This is what was listed in the sticky for the Lightest Turbo. I don't know if that is the difference between the Techart wing and the factory parts or the total weight of the wing motor, though.

if you are concerned a about weight, the aerokit rear lid and spoiler is the lightest.

The thing is that this weight, is bad weight too as it is high up in the car, I like the Aerokit rear wing but would rather just more cheaply replace the wiring harness and take out the motor. So I'm back on where I can buy the GT2 wiring harness
