Whining noise on cold starts

On cold starts, after sitting all night or longer, there is a high pitched whine from the engine area. The noise does not go away when I press in the clutch. It eventually goes away, after about 2 minutes. If the car is warm, or when driving there is no noise.

I searched and saw the power steering pump makes the same noise, but goes away when you press in the clutch and usually heard when driving.

Anyone else have this problem, or have any ideas?

Thanks,
Mike

Thank you. It does sound like it might be from the area of the engine. I guess I am off to the local indy shop.

What do they do (the pump) and is it a costly repair?

It is an air injection pump. It pumps air into the heads during coldstart to help reduce emissions. No idea on price.
