I have a call into Eric at Bumper Plugs, but does anyone know of a bumperette delete kit? I really want to eliminate the bumperettes, not even painting them is good enough.

 

Just talked with Eric. He says it is too big for a plug and it is a little bit of a pain in the ****. You have to pull the bumper cover and hacksaw the bumperette mounting brackets. Then you can put in a plate and cover it with resin and spray it. This is what I plan to do unless anyone knows a better way.

 

can't you just get a European bumper cover? I agree with you that the bumperettes are ugly (remember what Porsche did to the front bumpers of the first 996 TTs?). I thought that I saw a Euro bumper cover for sale recently, either on this forum or ebay.

I have just done it. The few people who have seen it says it looks awesome. I will have pics by the end of this week. My guess is these parts can be laser cut and formed out of micro polished stainless steel for about $300.00. They can be installed in about one hour.

Let me get a picture. I had these done at work on the laser cutter and then had a sheetmetal journeyman form the radius bend. I cut quarter inch slots which look like air louvers or vents. I also cut a three inch round hole (hole saw) in the 5 mph aluminum bumper so the vents really do vent warm engine compartment air. On my arctic silver the mirco polished stainless steel blends right in. I believe they could be painted to match by any body shop for less than $50.00 Each vent uses four bolts and installs in minutes after the bumper is removed. I used a stud welder to shot the studs into the front plate. All you do is place the front plate in the cut out hole and bolt the back plate to the studs. They look like they are OME and make the car look great.

I am trying to get Rob at S Car Go to send me some pics of the covers installed on the bumper. I will post as soon as I have them. If you like them, I can have a set made up for you. With the laser cutter, the cost is minimal.

I have removed my buperette. I used factory bumper to send out to bumper shop to removed bumperette......That is not easy job......talk to your body shop.

What's the big deal... I think it looks kinda empty without them. I think they are a nice detail myself... but to each his own!

 

I agree... and they do serve a purpose... if someone hits you there at 5 or less MPH... you should be fine, or have minimal damage... I was rear ended in my boxster once at a low speed, and the bumperetts save the rear of the car... there was not a single dent or scrach, although I kinda wanted there to be one, because it was a hit and run, and we finaly cought the guy, but because there was no damage, they could not arrest him...

 

I had the bumperettes removed as well. The look is very clean and I love it. My body shop ordered a new US Spec rear bumper, which comes with the no holes for the bumperettes (they need to be cut at the shop).

 

As mentioned, ordering a new rear bumper should get you the euro version (before square cut-outs, a body shop would normally do).
Otherwise, brackets behind can be removed (saved for re-installation w/out hacksawing).......filling of remaining cavity in the ABS bumper can be done by a shop who works w/this material often

If you really like them that much, then maybe someone has an extra set of front ones laying around that you could use. They weren't lovingly referred to as warts for nothing.
