yeah, i didnt realize asking at what point your felt financially able to afford the car I'm looking to get. there's no accurate survey this stuff. most owners are either

a) in debt up to their eyeballs
b) have inherited a ton of money
c) older and have a 25 year nest egg built up

i dont match up with either of these so i'm trying to get some guidance.

thanks for your help.

if your pulling down 300K and have a net worth of 500k you have a lot more to think about than a TT. Oh, and this type of post is never a good idea....

Thanks Tom. I think i'm just getting cold feet before a purchase, and dont want to look back and feel like i bit off to much car at a young age. which is why i'm using financials to make the deciion. if 90% of this board owns a 996TT on say $150k/salary, suffice it to say i should buy one no prob.

do i dare ask why its not a good idea? i cant imagine other members arent curious also? $300k is a good salary, but being in sales that can change quickly too.

Here is the bottom line...the 996TT are good values as they depreciated substantially. Buy an 02 X50 and never look back!!!

I think its more about building as much equity as early as possible while you dont have as many other expenditures...that said, at around 60k for many a 996tt, I would say you could probably splurge a bit if that is your financial situation...

Income on its own is irrelevant. You could be making $1M / year and still not be able to "afford" a 996TT if you're tapped out with other expenses at the end of every month.

Sounds like you just wanted people to know you made $300K and to pat you on the back.

thanks, when did this big drop happen? soon as the 997 rolled out? i watched them close a few years ago, then for the last 2 years zoned out. a friend of mine just nabbed one for $42k at an auction. '01, 6 speed, 30k miles. i'd buy that in a heartbeat!

First of all, someone mentioned opening a restaurant this year. It is never really a good idea in any year but this year will be particularly hard for new restaurant concepts. Building costs are going through the roof, food costs are ever increasing and labor is becoming more expensive. San Francisco Bay Area already has its share of good restaurants.

Regarding the original question, don't worry about income and net worth. Just make sure you set aside at least $500/month to spend on your car after purchase, gas and insurance.

i appreciate the insult, but you're way off base. i'm not here to brag, and quite frankly, i doubt $300k is big money on this board. i had a big year, probably wont happen again, just trying to decide what to do. i agree with your affordability comment though. aside for the car, i dont have any other vices. just trying to save as much as possible.
