High Pitched whine + Power Steering

After driving for thirty minutes at highway speeds, I was coming to a stop to pull into a parking garage and I heard a high pitched whine for ~10-15 seconds. Is this a normal operation for the power steering pump? I don't remember hearing the pump except in the morning or when cold. Warranty runs out in a month, so I'm sure all kinds of **** is going to start falling off the car(like the left horn that quit today).

Does the sound go away when you depress the clutch?

I just did the 30 seconds of 3-4K RPM revving and didn't hear any whining coming from the PS Reservoir, or anywhere else.

I'm hoping to hear that occasional brief whining from the PS Pump is normal. I am not used to hearing it after the car has been warmed up.

how about you check the pentosin container near the AC compressor to see if you have enough fluid...

It sounds like this .... There is a TSB to fix this (#4897, 1/05). Pressure relief valve in the power steering reservoir. I had the same thing it was fixed under warranty.. Mine seemed to do it more when it was hot ( summer )....

The pentosin fluid is highly flammable, and when it hits hot exhaust, watch out!

I have the same problem as we speak, took it to the dealer the Porsche tech heard it and rapidly told me it was the PS Reservoir, my 03 is CPO but unfortunately covers one of the two parts needed for the replacement, in conclusion the part that is not covered by the extended warranty costs $1,500 !!! ouch ! At least that's what I was told by the SAdvisor. I rev it to 3-4K and while the RPM's come down slowly it makes the noise for a few seconds just like you described.

Good luck,

Good luck,
Hopefully you are fighting this!

The CPO does NOT COVER JUST A LIST OF 'PARTS', legally it describes categories or parts and events that are warrantable failures. (They may have a list of parts they use internally, but at the end of the day, it is the FAILURE MODE AND PART that matters. In particular the CPO covers:

"Steering (incl. power steering and hose)"

http://www.porsche.com/usa/pre-owned...oved/warranty/

It is NOT possible for the warranty to cover a single failure, but only ONE part. Either two parts failed at once (never) or one failed and took out the other, or they are lying. If a warranted part failed, all the subsequent damage is also covered. if an unwarranted part failed, well then the initial AND all subsequent damage is NOT covered.

The real reason is that they figure you are gullible and will pay them the $1500. (Are you? ) Since PCNA will only reimburse them 3 hours for the job, at a rate way less than the hourly rate you pay. Heck, they may even double dip- submit for the cpo AND have you pay for work.

Also note that there is a TSB for this failure- it is a known failure.

This is a real crock...

A

So if I did the 3-4K RPM for 30 sec check, am I most likely okay?

My PS fluid is just below the Warm line and its been sitting for an hour after a twenty minute drive.

Does the PS pump always make the same sound when it is working, and the problems described above lie with the timing of the sound?
