Insurance and DEs
Insurance and DEs
I know this has been covered before, but after reading through many threads (here and on RL) I could not find an answer.
I just renewed my policy with SafeCo and they changed the language to exclude losses incurred during DEs
. Since I want to learn to use my car as intended
, I would like to have it insured during the education process. Does any one specifically know of another insurance company that will cover you while participating in a DE? I know that there is track insurance, but given the expense I would rather exhaust the traditional route before exploring that option. BTW, I'm in GA.
On a side note: I know many of us participate in DEs, AutoX, and other educational events. Don't assume your covered during such events, at least take the time to read the exclusions in your policy.

Mike, thanks for your response. I did manage to find a few companies (4) that will cover (or should I say not exclude) DEs. I will actually be saving some money by making the switch so I'm glad I went through this effort.
The biggest problem you have in determining if a DE is covered is getting past the CSR/Agent and getting them to actually speak to the underwriter. Most CSRs and/or Agents do not know the answer to this coverage question. Then, just to make sure, you need get them to provide you with the actual wording that excludes "racing events"-just to make sure. Even if you have the verbal OK from the Underwriter it's best to see it in writing, i.e. the policy context.
Several of the companies could not give me the actual wording until I actually bought the policy-that's like buying a car without test driving it first. But for those that did it was pretty clear if coverage was excluded or not. Here's a sample exclusion from one of the more restrictive companies:

Loss to your covered auto or any non-owned auto while it is:
Not much ambiguity there. Here's a sample of more preferred wording:- operating on a surface designed for racing. This does not apple to an organized and controlled event that is not a speed, performance, stunt, or demolition event;
- participating in a high performance driving or racing instruction course or school; or
- preparing for, practicing for, used in, or competing in any prearranged, or organized:
- race activity; or
- speed, performance, stunt or demolition contest or exhibition.
Loss to your covered auto or any non-owned auto, located inside a facility designed for racing, for the purpose of:
Hope this helps.
- competing in; or
- practicing or preparing for;
The other issue is "# of events". That's what stopped me in my tracks with another company recommended by another member... 10 events... That could be 1 day or 3 days, but 10 events get's eat up quick if you're in someplace warmer (as you are!).

I'm simply using regular insurance that does not exclude DE activity specifically. I think the insurance you're referring to is specific to DE events.
I'm not sure if I'll get to 10 events this year, but I'll be pretty close if I don't

Mike I don't want to post the company names because it may alert them to the fact that they have this exposure thereby increasing the possibility of them amending their exclusions. Further, each policy will vary by state, so a policy that works for me in GA may not work for you in VA. That's why I posted the methodology above, so that others will know exactly how to find the right coverage.
Also, I wouldn't say they "support DEs", I would say that DEs are not excluded. One of the agents said to me that the underwriter confirmed they would cover me in the event of an accident at a DE, but the underwriter also said they would likely drop me from coverage at the renewal following the accident.
