Are you planning to upgrade to a 997TT?

Like I said earlier my plans where to take my 996TT add a Techart or GT2 body kit as well as a GT550/600 package the price for that was $30K if not more for the Techart kit. Value at resale = $5000.
In a word, no.
I much prefer the clean lines of the 996. Inside the Nav in the '6 makes me crazy, but otherwise what else do you need? You can upgrade that pretty easily anyway- and not be stuck with Porsche maps.
For the price differential -$40k plus mods- just to have the latest? I'm not wired that way.

The difference between the 996 and the 997 is about the least dramatic of all 911 changes. Very little has changed since 2000. Even the Hp has not really gone up much and that can be explaned with slightly better intake and exhaust as well as ecu. I would be happy with either, but I would not rid myself of a 996tt to get a 997tt, as there is nothing that much better in the 997 that you cannot get into a 996. As for looks that is all relative. I prefer the 996tt front end over the 997, but I do like the integrated bumper exhaust exits of the 997.
The difference between the 911 and the 964 was fairly dramatic but not nearly as dramatic as the change from the 964 to the 993, which again was not nearly as dramatic as the change to the 996. The 997 was more of a face lift of the 996. It's not like they reverted back to the 993. The wheelbase remained the same as the 996, the engine is the same as the 996 both of which are different than the 993. So anyone that says that they like the 997 because it goes retro to the 993 is only looking at headlights and nothing more.

The 997tt is a better car in every respect, maybe only marginally in some catagories, but better none the less. Having said that, if I had a x50 996tt I doubt I would be making a move. When I went to pick mine up, they had a blk/blk 05 turbo S with only 1200 miles for 105k, I came VERY CLOSE to just taking that instead and saving myself 25k.

If you compare the 997tt to it's competition now, versus the 996tt to it's competition when it came out, you will realize that the 996tt is indeed the better car for it's time. The 996tt dominated just about everything in it's time. It won most of the comparisons in the 2000-2003 time period. In one comparison where a modified autothority 993tt was involved the 996tt was even considered better than the 500+ hp autothority 993tt.
The 997tt is not enough of an imporvement to compete with the monsters comming out today. I think Porsche should have upped the ante a little more. The 997tt should have come out with the new GT2's hp level and the new GT2 should have come out with hp level in the low 600's. The new SRT Viper is putting out 600 hp, the new LS9 vette will be 600+ hp, the GTR is close to 500hp, blah, blah, blah.
Porsche only made subtle improvements to the 997, not enough for anyone to say WOW and it shows in all the magazine write ups of the last 2-3 years where the 997 has lost so many comparisons, sometimes unfairly albeit, but still lost.
The only 997 that I consider a vast improvement over it's 996 counterpart is the GT3RSR. A 10% increase in hp for an NA motor that was already producing over 100hp per liter is incredible. Too bad they did not follow suit with the turbo versions.
Having said all that, I think that the 997/996 tt's are the best 911's ever made, far outclassing their ancestors and I would happily own either. I also think they have gone about as far as they can be taken and that the new kid on the block (cayman) will become the next king.

The 997TT won't cut it, the 997 GT2, now that's in another league by itself.
Do you think the 997TT upgrade is worth it? If not at what $ differential (if any) would the upgrade be worth it?
With about $10K worth of mods, I think the 996TT becomes a better performing car than the 997TT. The only other factor then becomes look/feel. Though the 997TT looks better, I'm not sure that it looks enough better to warrant a $40K or more differential.
Am I missing any other obvious merits that the 997TT has?

Nurburgring Track Times
7:54 --- 156.46 km/h -- Porsche 997 Turbo, 480 PS/1620 kg (sport auto 06/07)
7:56 --- 155.80 km/h -- Porsche 996 Turbo, 420 PS/1569 kg (sport auto 06/00)
yup the 997TT is slightly better than a very early 996TT (0.41 mph difference around this 14 mile track) and I'd venture that the newer 996tt versions would be closer. 997 is also fatter. Again, aftermarket mods favor the 996.
Heck, I'll take both please.

Being a owner of many Porsches over the last 20+ yrs
If I was to upgrade from my 996TT it probably be to something like a Lamborghini Gallardo, poss Ferrari 360, maybe even the Audi R8.
