Do you think the 997TT upgrade is worth it? If not at what $ differential (if any) would the upgrade be worth it?
With about $10K worth of mods, I think the 996TT becomes a better performing car than the 997TT. The only other factor then becomes look/feel. Though the 997TT looks better, I'm not sure that it looks enough better to warrant a $40K or more differential.
Am I missing any other obvious merits that the 997TT has?

It might look better to you...not me. I have no plans or no interest in getting a 997. My car is setup perfect for me and why would I want to mess with perfection. I am doing a motor build as we speak and honestly no matter what has came out it just doesn't wow me.Don't get me wrong I did drive a 997 TT for a few hours and yea it was nice, but you would have to pry my 996 out of my dead cold hands.I think i grow really attached to my cars, I have a few that wont be going anywhere soon
but what if you upgraded a 997tt with 10k worth of performance upgrades... I love my 996tt but I do think the 997tt is a better looking car with a nice interior other then that dumb looking time clock on the upper dash..

I wasn't until I thought about doing the same thing and upgrading to a GT550 kit along with a GT2 body kit. Added up it came to pretty much the same cost as a 997TT and the 996TT mods are worthless at resale.
I'm trying to find a buyer the moment I do I'm going to pick up a slightly used 997TT.

Absolutely, but I'm waiting till I can pick one up in exchange for my car plus about $5000 in my hand.
I want a 997 TT, but only so I can put 20's on it and take my wife on dates. I think as far as luxury/style/GT-ness, the 997 is a better car. I would not be making that jump for performance far too easy to run circles around it in a 996 TT.
And I would never ever buy a brand new Porsche Turbo of any model year. In a year or so when the PDK and Direct Injection comes out and the TT's are a couple years old, the prices will ahve dropped significantly. I'll take one when they are sub 100k. In white.
I'd be interested in seeing a comparison between a 996 TT S or X-50 with flash & exhaust vs a 997 TT with the same mods. My bet is that the 996 TT would win in every performance aspect (except maybe braking, for the x50)

They do improve but you have to remember that Porsche doesnt build the car for modifications, so the modability does not come with the territory of being better for the next model year. Most people we see modding the 997 turbo ditch the stock turbos very quickly.
As for everything else, there it just seems that Porsche has gone more luxo GT than pure sport with the 997 TT. And while it may outperform the 996 TT stock for stock, once you've modded it's anyones game.
