one other reason to run the engine is so that excess residue on turbine fins get spunned off. at least this is what i heard.

this is especially important when car is driven hard.

I cool down after very hard driving, otherwise I drive slowly for final 2 miles and then
shut her down. If the turbos get well worn then I guess that is a nice invitation
to get those GT30/71's...or K24/20g's

My ignorance was thinking that possibly they didn't even need them... but i'm wrong and I believe my next purchase will be turbo timer...
I somewhat remembered from another thread that while a turbo timer is going, you cannot lock the door. If you are going to stay with the car anyway, why use a timer?

Perfect. You figure out how to hook it up, and not screw up the electronics and let us know how it works.

The point is that those older, simpler cars COULD use turbo timers, not that 996 owners don't WANT them...

+1 I always cut my sessions at least a lap short for a nice cruising cool down lap and slow drive back to the paddock and shut her down. That's it. Far too easy to heat soak while idling at the track.

I have no idea if it's the right thing to do, but that's what I do.

The 944 Turbos came with an eletric pump that would continue to flow oil until the turbo had cooled down to a good temp. Do the 996TT's not have these? I would have assumed all the other turbo porsches would have had them, certainly the water cooled ones atleast.

You could hear a little electric motor whine sometimes if I cut my cool downs short.

That whine is probably the engine fan

No cool down oil flow, not on a TT....Stevo and heavy...you guys are willing to replace the turbos, so be it. Talk to guys who rebuild them. Ask them what they would do.

My car sits for around 20 ~ 30 secs and that's because I haven't pushed her yet (60mph) not done with break-in period yet.

Always 2-3 min cool down lap (not idle) not only to cool motor but to also cool brakes.

Surely you must have sat in a traffic jam before, ever watch that temperature gauge rise? not good for cars especially after a 20-30min hard track session.
