cool down after driving?

Do you guys keep your car parked at idle for a while before shutting it down after a drive? Do you have to let the turbo cool down before shutting off the engine? I have heard both yes and no to this question... looking for the truth.

The answer is....YES.

Regular driving at least 60 seconds. Spirited driving 120 seconds.

If you shut down oil stops flowing. The oil cools the turbos. Try this...next time you are done driving touch the turbos (just kidding). They are friggin' hot...they cool quite a bit with just 1-2 minutes of idle.

I don't, even on track, what I will do is go for a cool down lap, basically a slow drive for a couple of min, if on track the worst thing to do is sit an idle for a couple of minutes

Yes, I idle mine for 2 mins after every drive. If I just go for a very short trip and don't get the car up to operating temp, then I don't do the cool down.

I don't think anyone is using a turbo timer...for some reason, Porsche's don't like them...

i used to drive 300ZX TT, RX7... i know, inferior cars but used turbo timers back then, have my 996TT and doesn't seem like anyone uses those... i wonder if there's a reason for that?

Yes, I always let the car idle for at least a minute or so, as I have been told that it is more important for the turbos to cool after a drive to get oil into them for start up, so that you don't engage them dry-
Makes sense to me, so I have always done it.

pretty ignorant statement dont you think? the idea behind using a turbo timer is the same...regardless of which car it's put in...

S14roller, i think you misunderstood me, i'm not trying to make any type of statement. I love my 996 much more than i do any other car i've ever owned. My point was... it doesn't seem to be a common item used by porsche turbo owners.. whereas many of the japanese turbo cars i've seen use them... so I was curious as to why? My ignorance was thinking that possibly they didn't even need them... but i'm wrong and I believe my next purchase will be turbo timer...

Kevin at UMW, a rebuilder of many turbos, told me to cool down. So I cool down. The magic number was 120 seconds. Beyond that you heat soak.

Believe that or not. They are not free to replace.

Because of the alarm system, apparently, one cannot trivially do a turbo timer. This was mentioned in several threads on several forums. If I am wrong, so be it. This is year~ old data now.

I just do it. It is habbit now.
