When are upgraded boost hoses needed?

I recently had a boost hose that connects to the intercooler come loose slightly, as well as cracked f hose (connects to the dv's). The boost hose was reattatched and the f hose was replaced with a stock unit. Now i'm back i'm business, but for how much longer?
Are boost hose problems common with stage 2 cars (500-525 crank hp) or is this more of a problem with higher hp cars? For those of you with cars similar hp to mine, have you experienced problems with your oem hoses?
What upgraded hoses are recommended to get the job done? I'm familiar with evoms and agency (which run about $1K for the whole set).

honestly if under 600hp stock are probably "ok"
most people if the car is modded from stock boost will upgrade. I recommend the silicone boost hoses from Dan at Vivid.
they look good, work great, dont pop off and I personally have had good success with them while not with the others

boost hoses are a must once you start increasing boost- nothing worse than hearing the pop and whoosh during the heat of battle!

it's an easy mod, makes the engine compartment visually more appealing and protects against poor performance.

It's a critical item especially if they already popped off once.

Let me know if I can help JB- I did mine and they are relatively easy

Agency Silicone Hoses

With a 650 HP kit I also had the silicone hose set from Dan put on. I'm in with Tom's post, they look great, work great, and I've never had one pop off. Though it also sounds like some folks have had great luck running OEM hoses.

I've been told, though I have no evidence, dyno or otherwise, that at higher boost levels OEM hoses can bulge, potentially bleeding off some amount of boost. In comparison the silicone hoses are strong enough that they don't bulge when you run higher than OEM boost. Again I have no evidence, but it makes intuitive sense to me. My silicone hoses are far more beefy than the rubber OEM stuff that came off the car.

Frankly the more OEM parts I've had replaced on the 996TT the more outrageous it seems that a car that originally sold for $145,000 has all these crucial parts made from rubber and plastic. Regardless, Turbos are great cars that win races right out of the box. But more boost and power equals more stress and I feel more comfortable upgrading as much as I can to support the change from OEM boost levels.

I smile whenever I open the engine compartment because whatever else they may do the Agency/Vivid hoses just look great and let's face it, for the OEM 996TT, Porsche did nothing for the engine compartment to make it look as impressive as we all know it is. jaj

I run a good bit of boost from Garrett GT3071 compressors on OEM hoses. I blew one off early this season then added an additional hose clamp to each side. No further problems.

No, makes no sense. The volume of air that could be 'bleed' off into a bulge is nothing compared to the flow rates. A bulge is a few CCs compared to CFMs that are being pushed. and once the hose bulges that is it- no more pressure is lost, it just sits there bulged...

What else would you make hoses out of?? Preventative maintenance of rubber hoses calls for looking at these periodically. All these stories of 'stock hoses failing' seem not to take into the account that they are 5-8 years old. A new OE hose would be an "upgrade" compared to a hose that has been subject to excessive heat, oxygen and hydrocarbons for 5 years!

I think now we are at the real reason to buy these hoses. Which is fine.

I hear that 01 cars came with a slightly different design. 02 + cars have small ridges in the castings? that tend to keep the hoses on and tight.

I haven't personally seen this. But have read about it on more than one occasion.

jb,

When I switched from K16's (stage 2 and no hose problems) to K16/24 hybrids, one of the OEM hoses (MY2002) kept popping off the Y-Pipe. They were 4 years old at the time. I replaced them with the EVO hoses and they never came off again.

Its funny these boost hose problems are coming up since a few days ago my passenger side boost hose from the Y-pipe blew off connecting to the intercooler. Tonight I blew a hose on the driver side, not sure which one i quickly yanked at the hose connecting from the y-pipe to the intercooler and it felt strong so it must be the one underneath. I'll have to check tomorrow but def. considering upgrading to new hoses.
