Those pesky 24/18 cars!

Well we all met up this weekend to go for a cruise in Mexico and to get some lunch. On the way through Mexico I ran into Mr. Pauliewalnuts. We are both on race gas with our boost turned up. My brother is rolling with me and Paulie was cruising solo. We get down to about 60mph and take off. I tried to roll into the throttle a tiny bit on the 2nd honk so I started spooling, but it was useless. As soon as the 3rd honk hit Paulie jumped out a car or two because of a almost instant spool. I get into boost a few hundred RPM's later and begin my chase. I think he shifted early because I shifted at 7k and I got back almost to his bumper, then I shift into 4th and the clutch slips (so I'm like ****...) then I notice Paulie is pulling lengths on me all the sudden and I look at my boost gauge and notice the peak hold was 19.4lbs (Which is what I was set at basically), but my boost was down in the 13lbs area. I think I could have gotten to about even with him, but damn that car is fast. I was probably make about 640rwhp (in 3rd gear) or so on that amount of boost. He does have a significant weight advantge, but regardless that helps that car haul even more ***.

So I reset the peak hold after our little run and try and make another 3rd gear pull, and the car feels like a turd. Matt (my brother) is watching the boost controller and it spikes 15.1lbs and falls down into the 13s again. So we just drive it to eat. On the way home we leave it on the high boost setting and get the same result, well sorta (peak boost was only 14.8lbs this time). So we swap over to setting B which is my pump gas setting.. I hit it in 3rd gear and what do you know it make 17.4lbs and falls down into the 16s which is normal. We swap back over to the race gas setting and it makes 18.8s and falls down a tiny bit. So at this point we are like I wait a few minutes and roll into it again and it does the 14.8lbs of boost **** again. I swap settings on the boost controller and it makes the proper amount of boost. So my only guess is there is a hose disconnected or leaking somewhere on my boost controller setup or my stepper motor is broken. I am using a HKS EVC VI, but I am regretting not going with a Greedy.

All in all though it was a good cruise and good seeing a bunch of familiar faces. Though a certain Dr_Jitsu didn't show up! So you can see I am not afraid to admit a loss. My only excuse is that my boost controller, I think, is a piece of **** LOL!

This is what it sounds like to me also since you were able to run more boost on the lower setting.

I have used both the Greddy and several versions of the HKS EVC controllers. I prefer the functionality of the HKS, and they seem to have a more reliable stepper motor as well. I wouldn’t blame the boost controller until you have checked all your settings and hoses.

I'm going to take the bumper off in the next few days and start looking for problems. Hopefully it's one of the easier hoses to replace if that seems to be the problem.

Nice to meet you and your bro yesterday Chris. My f'ing battery was spent and the car didn't want to take a jump. Really wanted to run Tom and see what i'd be getting myself into with the Proto Kit. Guess i'll have to wait for that opportunity again.

Sounds good. You should also practice your brake-boosting for a roll race. It will help get those 3071's spooled a bit so you don't lag so badly right off the jump.

Chris,

I was beat from the night before. I wish I could have made it...Paulina's car ia incredibly fast, no doubt. If I am on full kill mode (1.4 bars, even mix of C16 and VP 109) I can edge him. On pump gas he edges me. The same thing is true for Dennis's Z.

Both cars are really faster than they should be.

I hear people talk about it. The only thing is when I engage the brake any it shuts the throttle body and I can even put the throttle to the floor and it just noses the car over. Is that in the tune that does that? Or is there any other way to brake boost these cars.

Sean, I forgot you were at the event. I didn't make it out because if I would have stayed till 2 or 3 it would be 3-4am before I got home. It was hard enough going to be at 2 and getting up at 9 to wash the car LOL!

You do know how to write/tell story Powell. I could feel the tension while reading it... it's almost like I was driving your car.

Ben,Tom lives in San Antonio so I don't know how many chances you will get to run him,but my car has the same Proto setup,I will be more than happy to let you run me.

Chris, perfect description of the event, unlike some others( I won't mention any names Dr Jitsu).Good to hear.

Paulie,

Akram mentioned that Tom lived in San Antonio. I guess I was wanting to avoid the constant stream of abuse i'll get after you hand me my *** . All joking aside I just want to get a ride at least just to get an idea what i'm headed for. The car definitely needs more power. Maybe we can meet up one night this week or next weekend and do a couple pulls.

1.43 can be pulled off if you have straight vp109 running 18gs...... if you a proto ecu it will not shut the TB down.... otherwise check with your tuner....

Marski, do you prefer VP109 or Sunco 104?I know you probably run C-16 but if you ran one of the choices listed which one would you run & why.
