school me on aftermarket head units

Don't have a 996 (yet) but was planning it in the next few months. I want to do an aftermarket double-din high-end head unit w/ Sirius and GPS. However, I noticed that there are different plcements of climate controls and other things around the console. Couple of questions:

1. Can these just be popped out and replaced in a different area? Any issues or extra pieces I will need to buy?

2. If the car has stock 2-din GPS and I want to replace it, will I lose other functions controlled by the stock unit?

3. Since the 03+ cars use fiber, can any old place handle the install or do folks have to go to shops who specialize in Porsches and related cars?

4. What do people do with the multi-CD slot single din thing? Can that just be yanked and replaced with gauges?

5. Finally, any suggestions? I'd like to keep it under $1500.

Thanks!

PIONEER AVICF90BT has dvd playback with bluetooth. If you don't care for dvd playback...AVICF70BT. 2003 & up complications are.... fiber optic signal going to the input side of bose oem amp.....no way to interface and keep oem amp. You will have to add a new amp. Also factory subwoofer enclosure is 1ohm impedence and very low power handline in that bandpass/ ported enclosure. Would be best to make a new enclosure back there and put an amp on it. If you want to keep the cost down go with a 2002 or 2001. These you can interface signal to the oem amp's(2) and just replace the indash head unit. You will need to find a shop handy enough to handle making a nice trim to go around your new head unit. If you want a supreme install.......duraglass and trim into the dash and fill it and paint it to match....will look better than factory(no seems)...the dash bezel will be one piece wraped around the radio......
