Sept. Car and Driver
Sept. Car and Driver
In the new issue of C&D, in their Short Take Reviews, they have an automatic 996TT cab review. How in the hell did they pull their numbers on a stock TT that is the heaviest TT made? They even state that these are the quickest times they have gotten on any 996TT whether it be a cab or coupe, or Tip or 6 speed. For the people that haven't gotten it yet, they pull a 3.8 to 60 and a 12.2 1/4 mile.

I did many 'off the line' races in my Tip. The thing was amazing. It actualyl shifts much faster in the automatic mode as opposed to the 'manual one'. The interesting thing I saw was how quickly it would build boost and how nicely it held boost in between shifts (remember that you don't need to lift your right foot in an auto). Much faster than most of the manuals I played around with and some of these guys go to the dragstrip quite often.
Also keep in mind the gear ratios on the Tip are different and this helps acceleration too!
I don't doubt those numbers for a second. Didn't Sharkster fly through the 1/4 mile (time wise) and was much faster than similarly prepped 6speed Turbos in the 996TT shootout in Euro Magazine? The Tip is VERY fast in a straight line.
Just my $.02

If I'm not mistaken, the TT coupe weight is "claimed" to be around 3,505lbs the TT Cab is "claimed" to be at 3660lbs. So the cab is 155lbs heavier.
So you guys think that 155lbs will make that much of a difference?
That's the weight of a very "busty" woman or a very small guy.
I'll just ride without a passenger!
Porsche's official number take 1/10th of second off the cab when compared to the coupe.
I lost about 50lbs when I got rid of the Stock exhaust so now I'm about 105lbs heavier than the TT coupe.
Some after market wheels and Brembo brakes should bring me down to the coupe weight.

BTW, have any of you ever watched a car magazine do performance testing? I'd be surprised if the torque converter and the drive train lived through it without some deterioration in their expected service life

Pulling a 12.2 in these cars means a low 1.7x 60ft time. That is one HELL of a launch, Dock.

So good launches, good tracks, and good weather are out there.
