Turbo Swap - Any nasty surprises?
Turbo Swap - Any nasty surprises?
OK guys, for all you who have swapped your own turbos, I'm planning to do this within the next month or two and I was wondering if there is anything to look out for, be carefull of or avoid? Oh, and do I need to prime the new turbos with oil? Cheers...
careful removing and replacing the oil lines going to the turbos the threads are a little hard to start....
use a little silicone to hold in the crush gasket when mounting the the exhaust to the turbo...
and yes prime the turbos by removing the fuel pump fuse and turning the engine over...
have fun and be patient

I am currently in the middle of a turbo swap myself- do yourself a favor and remove the bumper and intercoolers, its fairly easy to do. I didn't and it was a royal ***** to access the oil lines and mounts on top of the turbos, it is doable, but it sucks. Installing the turbos will be cake without anything in the way.
I would also consider any other mods you would want to do, its a great time to upgrade other parts such as maf, motor mounts, injectors, plugs etc... as well as some maintenance.

Spend an additional $1K-USD and have a shop do the swap. Why make yourself responsible for the results when you could blame someone else? You already spent $$$ on an 04-TT which in the UK is 2X the price in the USA. I wouldn't take any chances, personally, given the extra time I'd spend. You're going to need a re-tune / re-flash anyway so you'll need to take the car somewhere ether way.

becuase that $1k can turn into many times that when they *uck it up :-) If you can turn a wrench, its not that hard... internals? thats a different story.

Thanx deepblue thats what I thought, I was planning to do the intercoolers & plugs at the same time, at the end of the day its only nuts & bolts! (might regret that) btw when I flashed with FVD, they supply a cable and the software so you just link up a laptop inform them of any mods and they send an appropriate map from their vast library. You can do this as many times as you like at no additional cost, future proof eh?
Maybe so, but I,m not trying to build myself a 650-700hp monster, and remember we have bends in our roads over here! and the bits joining the bends together are barely long enough to get into 4th gear, by which time I could be fracturing the occasional speed law! But seriously, I'm looking for immediate spool up from fairly low revs, to fire me out of the corners asap, and total drivability. Give me a few weeks though and I may get bored and agree with you!
Yep, another vote for the oil lines. I had the lower one on the passenger side that simply would not come loose, so I ended up swapping the turbos with the top line off and leaving the bottom line [and the oil can] in place. No leaks....
Yeah, do the plugs while you are in there...they are a cakewalk when you have it torn down. Uh....not so much so if you just set out to do the plugs by themselves.

I can give you instructions and also a few pointers.
Or you can bring it round and we can do it in our workshop for you.
