I need advice

Folks-

I recognize that I have an addiction to buying 911s. My biggest issue now is that my GT3RS is great at the track, but has 2 problems: (1) I am afraid of crashing it so I don't drive at my limit, and (2) it lacks torque coming out of high speed corners (which may be my fault at turn in).

So, although this is the most incredible Porsche that I have ever driven or raced (I have owned or co-owned 12 911s), I am looking to downscale to a 996. Would a 996 GT2 be a good option?

Or should I go with a heavier 997 turbo or cheaper 996 turbo X50? (Both of which I have owned several examples).

Please help me - thanks in advance - Gerry

I'll trade you my 996TT for your GT3RS. No problems with haggling, etc. Save you lots of time and hastle.

Just kidding unless you want to do so....

All options are good ones. The AWD cars are less likely to kill you perhaps.... The GT2 has an oil cooled tranny, so if a track monster with lots of time....perhaps a better option. It is like a gt3/gt3rs in that respect. Me, awd with the tranny cooler added later would best, and the 996 prices are such that you could do so with ease compared to a real gt2...

996 GT-2 requires MUCH more skill to drive at the limit than a TT. If you are inclined to explore yours & its, then I'd agree to get the GT-2. If you want to go out and bomb around, the TT is the deal. I'm sure you'll find the power of the TT good, but the AWD and suspension will be wanting compared to what you have now or the GT-2.

Man, what I would give for a RS...anyways,

From what it sounds like, a 996 GT2 would be a great replacement, although they have been know to be finicky to drive. However, I have heard this is fixed with some adjustment to the factory suspension. If you have owned that many 911's and currently track a RS, I'm sure you'll be able to get used to the handling of a GT2, plus it would give you that extra torque you are looking for coming out of the corners.

As far as not driving it to the limit for fear of crashing it, I think I would be equally fearful of crashing a 996 GT2. It's still a $100K+ porsche, which isn't cheap at all in my book.

If worrying about crashing expensive car...A change to other fast and expensive (at least here in Finland!) Porsche won't help you.

Even though I track a lot with a Turbo, don't go for one if tracking is your priority. Turbo "needs" a lot of modifications and some are not even that much discussed around here. And after those mods you still have a lot of extra weight which is really a pain because the car is otherwise perfect!

A modded Turbo is one of the fastest cars ever on high speed tracks, but the GT3 RS is superior on the corners...

If you need more power, perhaps go for the 3.9l or 4.0l conversion with your RS. Actually in a stock form it has quite good power as many have witnessed: When taking advantage of the RS's great handling one can not pass it with a 996 GT2 on the next straight at all!

A 996 GT2 is very fast and might actually be what you are looking for.

Just remember the GT2's limits are difficult. The behaviour of RS is more refined. Majority of the track-driven GT2's I know have been crashed. Still with some small mods it really is one of the fastest cars out there ever!

As a bystander I see the problem with the GT2 is once you really start pushing for the ultimate lap times (lower than the good drivers can get with GT3's and Turbos) things get often scary and you can not sort out the situation anymore...But that's life

I suggest staying with the RS and getting a lot of quality training and driving - because it is so wonderful car!

But if power is your pleasure, go for the GT2!

Just remember they are similarly fast cars on track but the GT2 is more difficult to drive. Some actually love it because of that...for example I

Gerry, you want the honest truth!

YOU AIN'T DRIVING IT DUDE.

My good friend Gordon has that car bouncing off the Red line, that car can take so much abuse.

Best advise is to get some track tuition (instructor) along with track time and this will hopefully push you on. That is an awesome car you have...get on it!

You know the traffic situation there...Very difficult to drive fast 'safely'. But I thought what the heck, why not time something So I borrowed a mobile phone with RaceChrono and a good 5Hz GPS for a couple of laps.

I managed a 7.51 according to RaceChrono (www.racechrono.com) with a 5Hz GPS. I was quite happy because there was a speed-limited (30km/h or something felt slow ) road work from Miss-Hit-Miss to Wehrseifen and that particular lap included a slowish beginning and Hatzenbach section due to traffic. And of course random cars...but random cars are part of the TF anyway so I won't whine

Right after that I headed for another lap, according sector times I was already 5+ seconds faster after the beginning but later on there was the nasty roadwork in Miss-Hit-Miss and the Carusell was closed and some other accidents so I ended up with a 7.55. The data is on my friends phone so I can upload if needed, but it takes a couple of days. On an empty track 7.40 should go without additional sweat. After that I have to improve my driving skills, especially on the end of the course.

This with ~530hp Turbo and Pilot Sport Cups.
