oil change interval

i know it has been discussed a lot and the manufacturer recommend something like every 15k miles but what if i do only something like 3000 miles a year? i guess i don't change the oil every 5 years right? what is a common time delay? One oil change per year? per two years?

thanks

do not go any longer than a year. I do it every 6 months or 1000 miles.

+1 ya if you dont drive it enough to hit the intervals, change it atleast once a year. Gets rid of all the nasties that form in there, like condensation, plus the properties of motor oil break down over time, especially with things like gasoline, carbon and moisture sitting in there.

I've done my regularly every 5000 miles for the 195,000+ life of the engine and it seems to work fantastic - although I drive it year round and almost every day.....at a minimum follow the manual's recommended frequency - more often certainly won't hurt for a car that is not driven alot or stored for long periods - my 3 cents (fuel surcharge).....T2

well seeing it in my garage gives at least a little warm feeling when there is 14 feet of snow in front of the house (last year, no kidding, i measured it...)

T2, PLEASE!!! make a thread detailing some of the issues or lack there of, with your car. I would love to know as much as possible about the history of a car with so many miles. In fact I'm sure Porsche would too.

Me too...from a number of perspectives. I moved out of a 99 C2 because of the bad publicity about failures of one sort or another...and now drive the TT, which, I'm told, has a much better longevity record....and I am fascinated by high mileage cars....which may be a tribute to your attentive maintenance and/or the fact that Porsche built a great engine and platform in the TT....so I too would be intersted in the history....same engine and transmission? What have you changed out or had to replace over that 195,000 miles. What was the most troublesome issue or part? How did you mange to get that much mileage on an 03?? I'm sure you have a LOT of interested folks.

Gents,

I've posted the repair info in various threads throughout the boards - I went back and pulled from memory and from posts the list and now have it consolidated - these are listed in no particular order:

List of Repairs for the 996TT X50
· All three front radiators
· water pump
· coolant expansion tank (as a precaution with water pump)
· power steering pump/reservoir (for the annoyinig squeal)
· right front bearing, left rear bearing
· front diff (due to front bearing issue)
· clutch accumulator and slave cylinder (3 times now for the slave - one time lasted only 4 days and it failed - PCNA pulled all the parts on the shelves in the US as a result of this and a few others in the country with a similar issue)
· wiring harness repair (passenger side front most cylinder – harness to the coil pack chaffing issue)
· rear main seal (while engine was down for a wiring harness repair we pulled the tranny to inspect the bearings, clutch, pressure plate and flywheel)
· two bearings in the clutch assembly – one was bad, one was fine
· Decarbon the secondary air ports from the intakes to the exhaust
· Gas cap – the gasket finally went at 186,000+ miles
· Check valve and carbon canister on the vapor recovery system for the fuel tank
· normal services done on time
· brake pads (only on the 4th rear set and 5th front set - car has PCCB's and is tracked 6-10 days/year)
· oil changes every 5000 miles religiously
· tranny and diff fluids every 60,000 miles
· Baileys DV's
· GT-3 Cup front brake ducts
That's basically the list of major and minor repairs I've had to do to this vehicle - again daily driven, sun, rain, snow, sleet, track, whatever gets thrown in front of it. The car is driven as a commuter to and from work and in 2.5 years of it's 5+ year life it's been stop and go traffic for quite a bit of those commutes - just want to let you know it's highway miles for some part but many of them are hard traffic commuter miles (read stop and go for 30-60 minutes each way every weekday). Hope this helps. T2
